Strolling through history in the cemetery

CALLICOON, NY — Town of Delaware Historian Mary Curtis has extended an invitation to “anyone with an interest in local history or graveyards, or both,” to join her in a walking tour of Callicoon Cemetery on Sunday, August 30, beginning at 3:00 p.m. The walk is free and open to the public.

The cemetery is located just beyond the Delaware Youth Center, on Cemetery Road. The easiest parking will be at the youth center, next to the tennis courts. Be prepared to walk on unpaved, uneven ground.

Curtis’s family, many of whom are buried in this cemetery, has lived in the Upper Delaware Valley for eight generations. She worked for the National Park Service on the Upper Delaware, retiring as park historian in 2001. For over 20 years, she has also been doing storytelling performances throughout the region, with stories often based on local history.

“The stories of a place are the heart and soul of its history,” she said. “As we wander among the grave markers, I’ll share stories of the people buried here, the people who built this town and made the community what it is today.

“The walk will take at least an hour—more, if listeners have a lot of questions or I get carried away with some especially juicy story.”
