Chow down with Lewis and Clark
PORT JERVIS, NY The Minisink Valley Historical Society is pleased to announce that it will host a special cooking demonstration program on Saturday, August 29 titled The Foodways of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The program will feature some of the foods that were used on the expedition and how they were cooked.
The Lewis and Clark Expedition (18031806), headed by Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, was the first American overland expedition to the Pacific coast and back. In 2008, the societys director, Peter Osborne, spent 12 weeks following the trail of the most famous expedition in U.S. history. The program, which will be ongoing from 1:00-4:00 p.m., will also include displays and handouts.
The museum is also currently showing two exhibits highlighting the buildings Revolutionary War history. The first display, Two Hundred Years of History at the Decker Stone House, gives visitors an overview of the long and eventful history of the 1793 stone house museum. Another exhibit is called Of Hearth and Home 1770-1800, and describes for visitors the cooking techniques of the 18th century.
Fort Decker is located at 127 West Main Street. Admission is by a suggested donation of $2 for an individual and $5 for a family. The museum will be open from 10:00 to 4:00 p.m. The building is air-conditioned and parking is available.
