Join in a geography bee at the Bethel School

BERLIN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Wayne County Historical Society (WCHS) will host an open house at the Bethel School on Sunday, August 30, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a special presentation at 2:00 p.m. Volunteers from WCHS run educational programs each summer at the historic one-room school, built about 1870, through an agreement with the Wayne County Commissioners. The program is free to the public, and light refreshments will be served.

Ashley Liptak, a graduate of Honesdale High School and Bloomsburg University and a teacher in the Social Studies department at Wallenpaupack Area High School, will lead the special presentation, an old fashioned “Geography Bee”.

Zentangle workshops

HONESDALE, PA — There will be a demonstration of Zentangle at the Philip Hone Gallery at 742 Main Street from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28. Zentangle is described by creators Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts as “an easy-to-learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns…. Creating a Zentangle is an easy-to-understand process of simple, deliberate strokes that build on each other in beautiful, mesmerizing and surprising ways.”

A workshop on Zentangle will be held on Thursday, September 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., costing $35 including instruction and supplies. Another workshop will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance on Main Street in Narrowsburg, NY, also for $35.

Profits from the workshops will be donated to the PNH Research and Support Foundation ( pnhfoundation.org ).

‘Tortilla Soup’ warms up the night in Liberty’s LaPolt Park

LIBERTY, NY — “Tortilla Soup” will be the next film featured at The Sunset Series: Free Movies Under the Stars, on Saturday, August 29 at around 8:00 p.m. in LaPolt Park. The series is a project of The Liberty Community Development Corporation’s Downtown Committee.

The film stars Hector Elizondo, Jacqueline Obradors and Elizabeth Peña, and also features an appearance by Raquel Welch. It swept the American Latino Media Arts awards, winning for Outstanding Actor, Outstanding Actress and Outstanding Supporting Actress. Variety called it “a warm-blooded winner with equal emphasis placed on taste buds and heartstrings.”

Attendees should bring blankets or chairs to sit on, as well as warm wraps in case it gets chilly.

Labor Day weekend art show

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — The North Light Gallery will present “Labor of Art,” featuring the work of Julius Valiunas, Leslie Yudelson, Barbara Zweig, Johan Selleraad, Armand Agresti and Ellen Cibula, with an opening reception on Saturday, September 5 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wine and appetizers will be served. The work will also be on view Sunday, September 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The gallery is located at 17 County Road 16, 300 yards from the lake.

A touch of Brazil in the Poconos

LAKE ARIEL, PA — Classical guitarist Jay Steveskey will perform a concert, “From the Rain Forests of Brazil to the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania,” at Lacawac Sanctuary on Saturday, September 12 at 5:00 pm. Admission costs $20. An optional dinner to follow costs $25; reservations are required for the dinner. Proceeds benefit the Lacawac Sanctuary Forest Preservation Fund.

Steveskey will perform works by Villa-Lobos, Barrios and Pernambuco. He is a regular performer throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania and founder and president of the Classical Guitar Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
