NARROWSBURG, NY — “Recollections: Objects of Memory,” an exhibition of sculpture by Nadine Saylor, opens at the Alliance Gallery this Friday, with an artist’s reception from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Saylor sculptures employ the special qualities of glass to explore concepts related to history—both personal and social—and the evolution of feminine identity.

“One of my favorite pastimes is looking through my old family photographs of women wearing notable fashions and imagining what they were like. My work evokes my imagination as a child and my speculation of life before my time,” said Saylor, whose sculptures explore the common fluidity of glass and fabric.

Saylor, who received her Master of Fine Art in Sculptural Dimensional Studies at Alfred University in 2007, is interested in creating texture and pattern by using lace-like techniques that stem from her Italian glass influence. In more recent work, she has been casting glass doilies, signifying the disappearing relics from a familial heritage that are passed on from generation to generation.

“I found a box of about five different sets of doilies that all matched in an antique store. I couldn’t believe that someone would have actually let these go. This is when I began to research things that have been lost and deemed not important any more,” Saylor said.

The free exhibit is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County, NY, and is made possible in part with funding from the Visual Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
