Nancy Wells ‘walks the road’

DVAA hosts multimedia digital collages

NARROWSBURG, NY — “Walking the Road,” an exhibit of multimedia digital collage by Nancy Wells, opens at the Loft Gallery in Narrowsburg on Friday, August 7, with an artist’s reception from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The exhibit will be on view through August 29.

“Nancy Wells’ work has always been about creating from ‘the gut,’ producing paintings, sculptures, and prints drawn from the natural instinct that lies in all of us,” said the late Ahn Behrens, curator of Wells’ mini-retrospective at the Cathedral Arts Gallery in New Jersey. Since childhood, Wells has been involved in the alchemy of making art. She is a painter, printmaker, digital artist, photographer, sculptor, bookmaker, mixed media artist and poet.

In the last 10 years, Wells has been exploring the 21st century art-making tool: the computer. She has been creating original digital collages and paintings, and sometimes making images into folded books with her poetry. This body of work started with photographing people’s shadows.

“In most instances I combine a number of photographs and work with over 40 layers in Photoshop, creating new colors through transparent layering,” she said. “Because I am a process person, I personally find making digital collages and drawings very exciting and freeing. Themes emerge out of the creative struggle and eventually take on their own life. It is as if I were on a long country road, meeting a shadow of myself for the first time.”
