WAYNE COUNTY, PA — If you ever wondered how and where artists create their works, the Wayne County Arts Alliance’s seventh annual Open Studio Tour may be the place for you this weekend. The tour gives visitors the chance to visit, talk with, and purchase the creative works of 20 premier artists living and working in Wayne County at the studios where they produce their work.

During the tour, you will be able to see at first hand what inspires these painters, fabric artists, potters, sculptors, jewelers, wood-workers and metal-smiths, as they work with materials that range from ink, fiber, glass, wood, silver, bronze and found objects, to clay, wood, acrylics, oils, gouache, paper and watercolors. Their creations span a wide spectrum of art styles: traditional, contemporary, abstract, ethnic and even shock art.

The tour is also a great chance to explore the summer countryside—and appreciate its influence on the artists. For example, a visit to artist Anita McKenna-Murphy’s studio will take you to the quiet, bucolic northern part of the county (Lakewood), where McKenna-Murphy creates diminutive landscapes based on devotional paintings of the early Renaissance. Or a trip to the riverside studio of Thomas Colbert in Hawley will bring you face to face with his colorful representational paintings emphasizing light, water and reflection. On an old farmstead not too far from Honesdale, sculptor and blacksmith Richard Lichtenstein will show you his newest series of studies in human-animal interaction in metal and clay.

Other studio tour artists include Nancy Wells, Bill Creighton, Cynthia Furlong, Tora Edmonds and many more.

Works of all participating artists will be on view beginning July 10 at the tour headquarters, the Hanson Gallery and Decorium, at 1037 Main St., Honesdale. There, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day, you can see the art and pick up a Studio Tour brochure to map out your visits.

Brochures are also available at waynecountyartsalliance.org.
