This female black bear is eyeing a bird feeder in a backyard to see if she can get a quick snack. Because of a bear’s ability to climb, many bird feeders fall victim to a hungry bear.

Avoiding bear problems

As more people are in the area for the summer, enjoying being on the river or camping in the forest, there also seem to be more bears around. In reality, the number of bears does not increase during the summer—but the number of opportunities to get a free meal does, so bears are making their presence more obvious.

Milford shows off its gardens

MILFORD, PA—The Milford Garden Club will hold its 17th annual secret garden tour on Saturday, July 18, rain or shine. It is a self-guided tour, with viewing hours from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 pm. Tickets are priced at $15 per person, and are available on the day of the tour from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Children under 12 are welcomed free. This year, eight local gardens will be on display.

See the summer landscape at Grey Towers

MILFORD, PA — A special landscape tour offered on Saturday, July 18 at 1:30 p.m., “Evolution of the Grey Towers Landscape: Summertime in Cornelia’s Gardens,” will feature Grey Towers horticulturist Elizabeth Hawke and an inside look at how some of the landscape plants, trees and buildings were incorporated into the design of the 1886 French Chateauesque mansion estate by the Pinchot family.
