‘Third Violet’ pays tribute to Sullivan’s past

SOUTH FALLSBURG, NY — In its contribution to the Sullivan County Bicentennial theme this summer, the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop (SCDW) invites you to take a step back in time to the Catskills of 1895 in the musical “The Third Violet,” based on the novella by Stephen Crane with book and lyrics by Mitchell Uscher and music by Roy Singer. It will be presented for eight performances from July 16 to 26 at Fallsburg Central High School, 115 Brickman Road.

A singing, dancing, joyous tribute to Sullivan County, “The Third Violet” features 21 talented performers from in and around Sullivan County. It is under the direction of Lori Schneider-Wendt of Hurleyville with music direction by the composer himself, Roy Singer of Monticello.

Stephen Crane wrote “The Third Violet” right after his most famous work, “The Red Badge of Courage” was published. Tired of being asked to write more war stories, he aimed his pen instead toward romance—and an area he loved and called home, Sullivan County.
