Henry retires as chief ranger

UPPER DELAWARE RIVER — After 32 years with the National Park Service, Alan Henry, Chief Ranger at Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River, has retired.

When Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River was established as a unit of the National Park Service, the first person then-superintendent John Hutzky turned to when assembling his staff was Henry, a field ranger with the National Park Service experience who also had the familiarity with the Upper Delaware river that only a local resident could provide.

“I remember as a child, sitting in the river just upstream of Narrowsurg on Sunday afternoons with friends, and not seeing a soul—definitely not the number of visitors using the river these days,” said Henry as he departed. “I leave with fond memories of all our adventures at Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River and wish you all a safe and happy summer.”

Henry moved moved to Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River in 1979, first as a seasonal park technician, then permanently in 1980. Through the years he pursued his career as park ranger, assistant district ranger, district ranger and finally chief ranger.

Henry will continue to live in Beach Lake, PA with his wife, Karen Carlson.
