Evenings in the park with music

HONESDALE, PA — For the 41st year, the Wayne County Creative Arts Council (WCCAC) will bring entertainment to Honesdale with a lineup of 14 free concerts in Central Park.

Monday and Thursday evenings from June 15 to July 30 will bring music in a variety of styles and eras from bluegrass to rock, classical to swing. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m., except for the Independence Day celebration on July 3, which will begin at 5:30 p.m.

On Monday, June 15, the concert series will get off to a lively start with one of the series’ perennial favorites, the Northeasters Barbershop Chorus, led this summer by assistant director Clyde Kreider. The 28 members will blend their voices in a program that includes such favorites as “Sentimental Journey,” “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “Shenandoah.”

Thursday, June 18 will bring a new group to the stage: The Latin Jazz Project. Local musicians Mark Terwilliger, Eric Werner, Matt Hoffman, Dan Wolfe and Norm Sullivan, with guest vocalist Kathy Jenkins, will perform. Each was challenged to choose a jazz tune that is special to them personally and arrange it in a Latin American style. This will be an evening of new and original stylings with a Latin flair.

Performers featured over the balance of the summer will include the Moonlight on the Poconos Big Band, The Gypsy Jazz Quintet, Hickory Rose and the Indigo Moon Brass Band

Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair and enjoy a hot dog or an ice cream. No concert is ever cancelled. The new rain location is next to the park in the Episcopal Parish House.

There is no admission, but a free will offering will be taken.

The summer concerts are supported by the contributions of many local businesses and individuals, who are listed in the WCCAC’s brochure. A grant for advertising out of county was awarded by the Pocono Vacation Bureau through the Wayne County Commissioners.
