Dorflinger-Suydam revisits the Roaring 20s
WHITE MILLS, PA A program by author Ellie Laubner on The Fabulous Flapper will be at the Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday, June 6 at 1:00 p.m. The event was planned by Sally Soden, Maureen Clift, Betty Sweeney and Jeanette Dresing, members of the Keystone Gleaners Chapter of The Questers, a national organization whose members learn about antiques, collectibles and local history.
The program will include a display of vintage fashions and accessories with a slide-assisted talk by Ellie Laubner, author of Fashions of the Roaring Twenties and Collectible Fashions of the Turbulent 1930s, who will bring the flapper to life. Flappers were young women of the 1920s who flouted social norms by wearing short skirts and excessive make-up, bobbing their hair, drinking illegal alcohol, smoking cigarettes in public, listening to jazz and, among other things, driving automobiles.
Laubner graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a degree in elementary education. She began collecting antique clothing and accessories in 1981 when her mother-in-law presented her with vintage dresses, beaded bags and eyeglasses. She taught History of Costume and Color, Line and Design at Northampton Community College from 1986 to 1992.
The event is open to the public. A donation of $12 at the door will be used toward a grant in support of a White Mills Community Heritage Trail. Admission includes refreshments and a guided tour of the Dorflinger Glass Museum following the talk.
