Working with nature, creating habitats

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — Sullivan County Community College will offer two outdoor-themed sustainability workshops in June.

Andrew Phillips of the Hancock Permaculture Center will lead the day-long “Introduction to Sustainable Landscape Design” on Friday, June 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This session will provide an introduction to sustainable living systems, and will cover how to apply permaculture, a holistic approach to land use that supports working in harmony with nature, to food production, home design, construction and energy. The course fee is $75 and the registration deadline is June 1.

Barbara Restaino, owner of Restaino Design Landscape Architects in Grahamsville, will conduct a two-part workshop on “Creating a Backyard Wildlife Habitat” on Tuesday, June 9 and 16 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Attendees will learn how to attract wildlife and preserve their natural habitats through the use of sustainable design and maintenance practices. As part of this workshop, attendees will find out how to have their backyards certified as wildlife habitats by the National Wildlife Federation. The course fee is $15 and covers both sessions.
