Green day

Monticello and Fallsburg golfers strive to hone their skills on lush greens at Kutsher’s

By RICHARD A. ROSS

MONTICELLO, NY — Golf is a personal venture, an opportunity for an athlete to focus on his or her game and tune out the world at large. Ultimately, it’s about concentrating and improving. Absent are the noisy fans, the distractions and the clamor of many team sports.

It’s just the golfer, the course and nature, and the combination of the three made for a tantalizing day on May 7 as golfers from Monticello, Fallsburg and Goshen took to the greens on the front nine to reckon with the par 36 course.

Goshen’s match with Monticello was a league encounter, but Fallsburg’s was not. That said, the issue of team records and standings was not on the minds of the players from the two Sullivan County schools. They seemed more intent on working on their individual games and honing their skills in preparation for the OCIAA match at Swan Lake on May 12. From there, those that make the cut will have the privilege of competing in the Section Nine tourney on May 19 at the Villa Roma.

Goshen easily outshot its two opponents on the day. Led by Frank Winski’s four over par 40 and six over performances from Tyler Swingle and Mike Wares, the Gladiators turned in a total of 211.

Monticello (250) was paced by Angelo Niforatos, who shot a 45, and Jordan Herzog, who posted a 48. Fallsburg’s leading golfer was Kyle Geraine, who shot a 46. Chris Elliott posted a 48 for the Comets, who came in at 265 on the day.

Complete results were as follows:

Goshen: Ricky Patel, 40; Frank Winski, 40; Tyler Swingle, 42; Mike Wares, 42; and Matt Betere, 47.

Monticello: Angelo Niforatos, 45; Jordan Herzog, 48; Greg Siegel, 50; Brandon Rieber, 50; and Wade Huebne, 57.

Fallsburg: Kyle Geraine, 46; Chris Elliott, 48; Mike Scuderi, 50; Rich Elliott, 51; and Aaron Schmitt, 70.

Team records: Goshen 10-5 (5-2 OCIAA); Monticello 5-7 (1-7 OCIAA); and Fallsburg 1-8.
