Fallsburg tennis seniors honored as team garners first win

By RICHARD A. ROSS

FALLSBURG, NY — Now, as the close of the school year approaches, seniors are cherishing their waning high school days and marking off milestones, one by one.

For Fallsburg’s senior tennis players, the last home match of the season on May 8 was an occasion to be recognized by their coach, Janet Carey, for their devotion to the sport. Parents were on hand to receive flowers and hear words of praise spoken by Carey about their sons’ athleticism, improvement and scholarship.

Carey called up seniors Wesley Castillo, Andrew Kolansky, Jeffrey Wakefield and Sebastian Sarmiento. Jake Cabrera was not on hand for the ceremony.

Kolansky’s parents, Oly and Elizabeth, were unable to attend the ceremony, but brother Ben was on hand to show his support. Kolansky is a four-year veteran of the team. Later, he would defeat Burke’s Jimmy Murray 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to help his team to its first win of the season.

Castillo was chosen as the school’s OCIAA male scholar athlete. The salutatorian has been a four-sport athlete. This spring, he is playing tennis and running track. Castillo teamed up with Michael Levy to defeat Burke’s Mike Damiani and Tim Pezzulo in doubles by the scores of 5-7, 6-4 and 6-1. Castillo’ parents, Ed and Catherine, were on hand for the ceremony.

Wakefield is the son of Jeffrey and Linda Wakefield. He follows in the footsteps of his sisters, Jessica and Crystal, in what has been a 15-year stint by the family in Comets’ tennis. Wakefield’s parents were there for the ceremony.

Sarmiento was accompanied by his mom, Mariella Moreno. A fine tennis player and a long-time veteran of the team, Sarmiento will join Kolansky at the upcoming OCIAA tennis championships as a wild card doubles pair. Visit riverreportersports.com for an album of pictures.
