Seidl and Fiedler Most Outstanding Track and Field Male Athletes; Leroy Outstanding Field Athlete sets NYS mark in pole vault

MONTICELLO, NY — Let there be no mistake about it. This year’s Monticello Games set a new standard for track meets with a dazzling array of athleticism, record-setting performances, outstanding weather and uncanny efficiency.

Celebrating its 21st year, rave reviews abounded about the athletes, the food, the ambience and the long–awaited warm weather. Featuring 16 schools from near and far, the field of runners, jumpers and throwers was packed with talent. Arlington’s boys and girls emerged as the team champions but local teams had their share of glory, as did many individual performers who came away with plaques, medals and intense resolve to outdo themselves as the season moves on.

Sullivan West’s Colin Seidl was named the Most Outstanding Male Track Athlete. Seidl won the 3200 (9:56). He also won the 1600 (4:41.8) and the 3000-meter steeplechase (10:19.6). Tri-Valley’s Bob Fielder was named the Most Outstanding Male Field Athlete. Fiedler won the hammer throw (144-11) and took second in the shot put (45-10—) and the discus (123-11).

Sydnie Leroy of Port Jervis was named the Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete. Leroy cleared 12-6 in the pole vault, the highest jump in the 2009 spring season by any NYS girl. Her jump set a meet record. She also fared well on the track as she won the 110 high hurdles (16.1). Spring Valley’s Shelisha Johnson was named the Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete. She won the 100 (12.2), the 200 (25.2) and ran a leg in the winning 400 relay.

Boys meet redux

In team scoring, area schools fared well, given the size and depth of many of the visiting schools. Ellenville took second (142.75), Liberty tied Red Hook for fourth (56), Monticello took seventh (49) and Sullivan West was eighth (41.5).

Other top Sullivan County performances included: Long jump, 1st place, Tim Burgio (L), 20-3—. Burgio also took third in the 400 hurdles (60.1). High jump, 3rd place, Malcolm Strother (L), 5-9; Triple jump, 1st place, Jordan Wilson (M), 41-4½; Hammer throw, (in addition to Fielder), 3rd place, Matt Rogers (E), 98-6; 400 relay, 3rd place, (L), 46.1; Javelin, 3rd place, Brandon Tompkins (L), 134-9. Pole vault, 1st place, Greg Castro (L), 13-6; 800, 3rd place, Thomas Gonzales (M), 2:06; 3000 steeplechase, (in addition to Seidl), 3rd place, Dave Wilbur (M), 10:37.1; 1600 relay, 3rd place, Monticello, 3:38.7.

Top three finishers in boys events were as follows:

Individual events: 3,200-meter run, 1st place, Colin Seidl (SW), 9:56.4; 2nd place, Klaus Schmidt (RH), 10:04.8; 3rd place, Joe Violone (BH) 10:16.7.

400, 1st place, Ray Valencia (E), 51.6; 2nd place, Zach Grieb (G), 52.3; 3rd place, Jon Byrne (RH), 52.4.

Girls meet results

On the girls side, Tri-Valley took second in team scoring (80.75), Sullivan West was fourth (73.75) and Monticello was fifth (56).

It was great to see Fingers rounding back into form after her injury during the winter.
