Taking tea at St. James

CALLICOON, NY — Miss Burnham’s Tea Room will return to St. James Episcopal Church in Callicoon on Saturday, April 25 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event recreates an authentic cream tea, just like those you might find at many a church in England.

In addition to a wide selection of teas, there will be scones with cream or home made marmalade, finger sandwiches, sugar plums, dainty cookies and more. The tea, in delicate china tea cups, will be under the careful watch of St. James’ resident anglophile, Nellie Burnham.

If you wish to look the part of a proper English lady, you may want to borrow one of the fancy hats that will be on hand to wear, while you sip and munch. Red Hat ladies are encouraged to come in full millinery finery.

A donation of $9 is requested to further the work of the church. A booklet titled, “Scones, Sandwiches, and Other Delectables,” featuring an introduction to the world of teas by tea sommelier Elizabeth Knight, will also be available for purchase. The booklet includes recipes for Miss Burnham’s Special Scones, Wartime Bran Loaf from the pastry chef of the Waldorf Astoria, Spotted Dick and other favorites.

St. James Church is located on State Route 17B, across from Roche’s Garage. For more information call 845/887-5454 or 607/498-4614.
