Tri-Valley and Sullivan West girls dominate; Liberty boys win; Fallsburg and SW impress in non-leaguer

By RICHARD A. ROSS

LIBERTY, NY — Bright sunshine and balmy temperatures were a welcome relief as track and field athletes began to work out the kinks in a pair of early spring meets in Sullivan County. In Liberty, the Indians hosted Tri-Valley and a partial James I. O’Neill boys team. The Raiders were on spring break, so only a few were on hand for this Division IV fray.

Liberty’s boys, anxious to throw down the gauntlet, prevailed over their visitors by beating Tri-Valley 87-54. Meanwhile, Tri-Valley’s densely populated girls team showed it will be tough to beat this spring with a commanding 103-38 win over Liberty.

Tri-Valley’s girls were sparked by a revitalized Rachel Sanborn, back from her winter injury, great throwing by Tehnyat Kahn and Kaitlyn Torres, strong hurdles with Amanda Martin and Emma Tingley, powerful relays and jumping. Liberty’s Amanda Bertholf set a personal record (PR) in the pole vault with a leap of 8-6, and Christina McCarthy had a PR in the high jump (4-8). Speedy Jessica Dunnigan won the 100 and 200.

In the boys meet, Malcolm Strother won the 100 and the high jump. Tim Burgio was victorious in the triple jump. Greg Castro tied his PR with a leap of 13-6 in the pole vault. Teammate Ethan Meadow set a PR with a leap of 11-0. Tri-Valley’s Bob Fiedler prevailed in the shot put and discus. Teammate Jeremy Kinney won the 1600 and the 800.

At Fallsburg, the Comets unveiled their speedy sprinters in a non-league fray against Sullivan West and Livingston Manor. In the girls meet, Jahlesea Davis won the 100, and in the boys meet, Rodrick Cash took the 100 (11.9) and 200 (25.2) and Dyhu Anthony won the 400 (56.7). Ethan Herrera was the victor in the triple jump (37-09.5) and in the 110 hurdles (18.3), while Anthony won the long jump (18-3). Manor’s Steve Rogers won the shot put (39-04) and the discus (125-01). Sullivan West winners included Colin Seidl in the 1600 (5:21), Russell Bryan in the 3200 (12:50), Mike Sheldon in the 400 hurdles (65.1) and Dallas Ripley in the 800 (2:25.1).

Sullivan West’s girls showed their strengths with wins in many events. Winners included Sara Alsdorf in the 200 (29.6) and the 100 hurdles (17.5), Kasi Pilney in the 400 (68.2), Stephany Robison in the 800 (3:11), Rianne Erlwein in the 1500 (6:17) and the 3000 (13:44), Brittany Reddish in the shot put (27-4½) and Morgan Hawkins in the 400 hurdles (76.2). The Lady Westies won the 1600 and 3200 relays. Manor’s Mona Allen won the long jump (14-10) and the triple jump (31-5). Teammate Diane Hartlung won the discus (84-2) and Danielle Baker won the high jump (4-8).
