Clean it up and laugh it up

Eldred PTSO slates two fundraisers

By SANDY LONG

ELDRED, NY — Trash or laughs? Both will be tapped to raise funds for Eldred Central School’s “Raise the Lights” project by its devoted Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO).

The first event, the Eldred PTSO Spring Clean-up, is a community recycling drive to be held on April 18 at the Eldred Central School in Eldred from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Last year’s clean-up proved so successful that the effort has been expanded to include recyclable materials from the ongoing construction project at the school. Proceeds from the recycled materials will help to pay for permanent lighting at the school’s athletic fields.

Community members can clean up their yards, garages or basements while supporting the school. PTSO member Ron Thiele is coordinating much of the effort and can be

contacted at 845/856-1856 or thieleland scaping.com if help is needed in moving heavy items. “We got lots of calls last year from the elderly who needed help removing scrap metal from their yard and homes,” said parent and PTSO member Kim Lust, another organizer of the event.

The following items will be accepted and transported to Arthur Trovei and Sons in Sparrowbush for recycling or disposal: copper, brass, aluminum, stainless steel, lead, zinc, steel, cast iron, pewter, die cast, copper or aluminum wire, BX cable, electric motors, motor blocks, radiators, catalytic converters, batteries, scrap cars (contact Thiele), boilers, lawn mowers (no fuel or oil), bikes, guard rails, signs, metal posts, galvanized pipes, aluminum lawn furniture and old woodstoves.

Not accepted are: plastic, wood, glass, paper, rubber, barrels or drums, fuel tanks, propane tanks, cylinders, five gallon pails, paint cans or containers, pressurized cans, fire extinguishers, wire fencing or any material or container contaminated with oil, anti-freeze, solvents, gases or hazardous fluids or chemicals. There will be a $20 charge for the disposal of any refrigeration unit that has not been discharged by a licensed appliance technician and accompanied by a signed certification.

Following the clean-up, May 2 will bring New York City comedy stars Johnny Lampert and Moody McCarthy to the high school for Comedy Night. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. and the show will run from 8:00 to 9:30 p.m. A silent auction will be held and refreshments will be available. Tickets can be purchased at the high school main office, through a PTSO member or at the door.

Lampert is a regular at New York City’s and Los Angeles’ top comedy clubs, has also made numerous television appearances and has a sitcom deal with Walt Disney Television.

McCarthy is also in demand at comedy clubs and on television.

Parental discretion is advised for anyone under the age of 17, and those under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Contact Nanette Schips at 845/557-8710 or Kim Lust at 845/856-7398 for more information. In support of the event, Cedar Rapids restaurant will offer pre-dinner specials and donate 10 percent of the proceeds to the school project. Reservations are required.
