The monsters are coming…

Trout, that is, as Lackawaxen plans another Monster Trout Derby

LACKAWAXEN, PA — The Business Owners of Lackawaxen Township (BOLT) will stock 100 monster trout in the Lackawaxen river for this year’s Monster Trout Derby, in addition to thousands of trout stocked by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, ready for the open day of fishing on the Lackawaxen river on April 18.

BOLT and G. Anderson Homes are sponsoring the third annual derby, which is open to all anglers, with approximately $2,500 in prizes being offered. There is no entry fee for the public and no pre-registration. All that an angler needs to do is catch any one of the 100 monster trout being stocked in the Lackawaxen River between Hawley and the Village of Lackawaxen.

The trout are tagged with a number that corresponds with the list of sponsors. To collect a prize, take the trout to Angler’s Roost sporting goods store on Scenic Drive in Lackawaxen or to Wallenpaupack Sport Shop at Routes 6 and 590 in Hawley, where the fish will be weighed and certified. The angler will have his picture taken for the press.

The contest will continue throughout the entire trout season on the Lackawaxen River. The prizes will be available from opening day of trout season through the end of the season on February 28, 2010. The trout are approximately 21 to 28 inches in length and weigh between five and 10 pounds. A mix of brown trout, brook trout and rainbow trout will be stocked.

Sixty-eight of the 100 were caught during the trout season. Thirty-two from last season are still in the river.

Anglers may catch and release a trout. They may remove the tag and turn that in for their prize.
