The true meaning of ‘Art’

Dinner theatre at the museum

HURLEYVILLE, NY — The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop will present the Tony Award-winning comedy, “Art,” by Yasmina Reza (translation by Christopher Hampton) at a weekend of dessert theatre from Thursday, March 26 through Sunday, March 29 at the Sullivan County Museum.

“Art” tackles serious issues of life and art expressed in outbursts that sound like Don Rickles with a degree from the Sorbonne. Serge (Charles Blewett of Milford, PA), indulging in his penchant for modern art, buys a large, expensive, completely white painting. Marc (John Klemeyer of Shohola, PA) is horrified, and their relationship suffers considerable strain as a result of their differing opinions about what constitutes “art.” Yvan (James Heisel of Callicoon), caught in the middle of the conflict, tries to please and mollify both of them. As the three engage in an ongoing debate over the value of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict escalates to the point of nearly destroying a long-standing friendship.

Lori Schneider-Wendt of Hurleyville directs, Jim Schmidt of Hurleyville is technical director and Bunny Woloszczak of Hurleyville is stage manager.

Performances will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 26, 27 and 28 at 8:00 p.m.; and Sunday, March 29 at 3:00 p.m. Desserts will be served at the conclusion of the performance and are included in the price of admission, which is $15 for adults, $12 for senior citizens and $7 for students with a valid student ID. This show is not suitable for young children.

“Art” is being produced by special arrangement with Dramatist’s Play Service. No advance reservations are required. Tickets can be purchased online at ShowTix4U.com and will also be available at the door.
