EARL R. COSGROVE

Earl R. Cosgrove of Welcome Lake, PA, a retired contractor and farmer, died Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. He was 88.

He was the widower of Luella B. Troop Cosgrove, who passed away on August 16, 2008.

He was born October 5, 1920 in Englehart, PA to the late Friend and Bessie Miller Cosgrove. Earl and his wife were part owners of the Twin Lakes Boarding House in Welcome Lake with the late Carl and Mildred Cosgrove. Later, they operated their own construction business. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Narrowsburg, NY, a founding member of the Welcome Lake Fire Deptartment and was inducted into the Wayne County Baseball Hall of Fame.

Surviving are daughters Eileen and husband Ron Chorba; Kathy and husband Bill Taninies III; son Ricky and wife Tara; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers Carl and Paul; and sister Rose.

A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church, Narrowsburg, NY on Wednesday, March 18, 2009. Burial will take place at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery, Welcome Lake, PA.

ROBERT ENGLERT

Robert Englert, formerly of Damascus, PA, died on Sunday, March 1, 2009, in Hilton Head, SC after a long illness. He was 62.

The son of the late Raymond and Felice (Lee) Cocozello Englert, he was born April 25, 1946 in Callicoon, NY.

Mr. Englert was a graduate of Delaware Valley Central School in Callicoon, and Penn State University. He taught in the Philadelphia city school system and later worked for the U.S. Post Office in Roseboom, NY, from which he retired in 2001. Bob was an avid fisherman, expert cook and gardener, and loved living along the Delaware.

He is survived by cousins Marion Kessler of Ozark, AR, Karl Drews of Savannah, GA and Marie Drews-D’Angelo of New York City, as well a large extended family from Staten Island, NY.

Cremation was performed by Saul’s Funeral Home, Bluffton, SC. A memorial service will be held in Callicoon at a later date. Donations in Bob’s memory may be made to the Delaware Youth Center, Callicoon, NY.


MARSHA ELLEN GEROW

Marsha Ellen (DeCamp) Gerow passed away Monday, February 23, 2009 in Fort Myers, FL. She was 56.

Marsha was born December 16, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY. She spent her early childhood in Bethel, NY and New York City. In Bethel, she met her husband of 32 years. The couple later moved to Fort Myers.

Marsha is predeceased by her parents, Elaine and Frank DeCamp; and her brother, Wayne DeCamp.

Survivors include her husband, John; a brother, Dennis DeCamp; his aunt, Marion Anderson; several in-laws, nieces and nephews; and many close friends.

Marsha enjoyed helping everyone. Her love of life, thoughtfulness, and generosity will be missed. With that thought in mind, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

A memorial service will be held in Bethel later in the spring.


JOHN L. KNISE

John L. Knise of Long Eddy, NY, formerly of Stony Point, NY, died Saturday, March 7, 2009 at Castle Point Veterans Hospital, Castle Point, NY. He was 86.

The son of the late William and Johanna Behrman Knise, he was born July 16, 1922 in North Branch, NY.

He formerly worked on the Fleet Reserve in Stony Point, NY and was a retired laborer for Local 17 and Local 754 of the Laborers Union. He is a World War II Army Air Corps Veteran and member of the Allan Milk Memorial Post 7276 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Long Eddy, NY.

Survivors include son Michael C. Knise and wife Deborah of Clifton Park, NY; granddaughters Shannon Sykela and Amber Knise; two great-granddaughters; sister Barbara Mead and husband Ed of Avalon, NJ; and several nieces and nephews including Ricky and Evelyn Ruppert of Kenoza Lake, NY.

He was predeceased by a son, John L.; brothers Frederick “Sonny” and Franklin; and sisters Clara Ruppert and Gertrude Ebert.

VFW services were held Tuesday, March 10, at Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Callicoon, NY. Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 11, at Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Liberty, NY.

STEPHEN W. MARKS

Stephen W. Marks of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on February 27, 2009 at the Sentara Virginia Beach Medical Center, after complications from spinal surgery. He was 66.

A native of Roscoe, NY, he was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 17, 1942, the son of the late Martin S. and Eleanor Stern Marks.

The owner and operator of the M.S. Marks Trucking Companies in New Jersey and in California for many years, Steve was also retired from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, where as a member of the mounted police patrol he trained many of the police horses and received a Valor Award for saving a woman’s life.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hendrix, at home; daughters Merrily Lynch and husband Phillip of Cochecton, NY, Amy Marks of Newark, DE and Michelle Griffith and husband John of Cochranville, PA; sisters Re Marks of Springfield, NJ and Julie Allen and husband Don of Roscoe, NY; grandchildren JD Griffith, Kira Griffith, Stephanie Lynch and Thomas Lynch; nieces and nephews Jillian Marks, Laurie Allen-Kuehn and husband Perry and Michael Allen and wife Kori; great nieces and nephews; and his two retrievers and two cats.

A memorial service was held at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach on Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Pastor Rick Eschenburg officiated.

Funeral services were on Saturday, March 7 in the Harris Funeral Home Railroad Avenue, Roscoe, NY. Dr. Richard Dunn officiated.

Burial was in the Beaverkill Cemetery, Beaverkill, NY.


NENA C. MEYER

Nena C. Meyer of Long Eddy, NY died on March 5, 2009, at home. She was 83.

She was born on August 29, 1925, the daughter of Mario and June (Lytell) Darder in New York City. She married Vernon Meyer on April 25, 1942 in Callicoon, NY, and he predeceased her on April 1, 1994.

Nena earned her GED, worked for 15 years and retired from Delaware County Social Services. She was on the Town of Hancock Planning Board, a director of Home Extension, an election inspector, a fire commissioner with the Long Eddy Fire Dept, and worked at Delaware Opportunities. She was a member of the Holy Cross Church in Callicoon.

Surviving are daughters Arlyene Lusk of Yorktown, VA, Nancy Hillriegel of Callicoon and Darlene Farley of Newark, DE; sons Vernon Jr., Vincent and Bradford, all of Long Eddy; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother Ronald Darder; sisters Georgette Seiden and Alice Creech; stepsister Anna Fadrowski; aunt Alice DeFazio; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A Funeral Mass was held on March 10, 2009 at the Holy Cross Church, Callicoon with Father Ignatius officiating. Cremation followed.

JANIE C. NIELSEN

Janie C. Nielsen of Matamoras, PA, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Place, Port Jervis, NY. She was 92.

She was born on March 20, 1916 at Hainesville, NJ, the daughter of the late Joshua and Bessie Conklin Aber. Janie married Henry L.E. Nielsen, who predeceased her.

Janie was a retired assembler for Sparkomatic Corp., Milford, PA. She was a member of The First Baptist Church, Port Jervis, and the Port Jervis AARP.

She is survived by daughters Shirley Swartwood of Milford, PA and Mary Tumasian and husband Joseph of Shokan, NY; sons Frank Nielsen and wife Carol of Port Jervis, NY and Henry Nielsen and wife Gail of Sparrowbush, NY; sisters Helen Kline of Hopewell Jct., NY, Betty Ricena of Mifflinville, PA and Marie Roach of Port Jervis; seven grandchildren, Bernie, Susan, Deborah, Angelina, Karen, Sandy, and Tracy; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law, J. Bernard Swartwood on March 1, 2009; brothers Charles and Leon Aber and sisters Frances Hulse and Doris Aber.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 7 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis, with the Rev. James Broslus officiating. Interment took place at Rural Valley Cemetery, Cuddebackville, NY.

SUSAN THUMANN

Susan Thumann of Hornell, NY, formerly of Beach Lake, PA, passed away on February 28, 2009. She was 53.

The daughter of the late Lawrence and Helen Ash White, she was born September 9, 1955 in Roseland, NJ.

Susan is survived by sons Craig Thumann of Beach Lake and Ryan Thumann of Arizona; sister Sandra Marie White of Lancaster, PA; brother Charles Jamie White and wife Ha White of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and loving friends.

She was predeceased by her brother, Lawrence Colin White.

Friends are invited to call for a celebration of life on Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Rasmussen Funeral Home, 90 Main Street, Narrowsburg, NY.

Crèmation took place at Rochester Crematory, Rochester, NY.

WILMA LINKEY WALDER

Wilma Linkey Walder, age 72, formerly a lifelong resident of Sparrowbush, NY, passed away suddenly on Monday March 2, 2009 at her home in Crossville, TN.

She was born on October 22, 1936 in Port Jervis, NY, the daughter of the late William L. Sayre and Mary Linkey Sayre.

Wilma was a director and bookkeeper for the Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush, NY. She was a member of the Neversink Valley Museum, Port Jervis, and AARP.

She married Paul E. Walder, who predeceased her.

She is survived by her sister, Lillian Dudko of Lansdale, PA; step-son Alexander P. Walder and wife JoAnn of Newtown, PA; step-daughters Pamela Cammishion of Burlington, NJ and Sandra Sholenholtz of Philadelphia, PA; several step-grandchildren including Paul and Mark Walder; several nieces and nephews including William and Ginny Dudko of Sparrowbush and Peter and April Dudko of Telford, PA.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take place at Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush, NY.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of donor’s choice.
