Prison board names Steelman as replacement
By TOM KANE
HONESDALE, PA - Wayne County Sheriff Charles Morelli died on March 3 after nine years in office. A memorial service was held at St. Marys Catholic Church in Waymart on Monday, March 9.
The prison board, which met on March 10, announced that he will be temporarily replaced by chief deputy sheriff Mark Steelman.
Morrelli was elected sheriff in 2000. His department career spanned nearly three decades, dating back to 1980 when he was hired as a deputy sheriff.
Charlie was an outstanding public servant and a friend to everyone, said Wayne County Commissioner Tony Herzog, who is also chairman of the countys prison board. Herzog ordered the entrance to the county court house and the correctional facility to be draped in black and all flags to be lowered.
According to the county code, chief deputy sheriff Mark Steelman will serve in the capacity of sheriff until Monday, January 4, 2010 unless the governor exercises his right to fill the position by appointment with the consent of the Pennsylvania Senate, he said.
If the governor appoints a replacement, he or she shall serve until January 4, 2010.
The position of sheriff will be open to a special election to be held in conjunction with the municipal election on November 3. The successful candidate will serve for a two-year term from 2010 to 2012.
Candidates for the office of sheriff may be placed on the ballot by any organized political party. Each party will exercise its party guidelines to select a candidate and submit that persons name to the election board no later than September 14.
