Lois M. Hahn of Westbrookville, NY passed away Saturday February 28, at the home of her son, in Sparrowbush, NY. She was 69.

She was born on November 24, 1939, in Westbrookville, the daughter of the late Clifford “Kip” Ashworth and Ethel VanSickle Ashworth. Lois retired from records management at Shaw Enterprises, in Harriman, NY. She was an active member with the Westbrookville United Methodist Church.

Lois is survived by son Michael Hahn and wife Donna of Sparrowbush, NY; step-daughter Tina Lane and husband Michael of Port Jervis, NY; sisters Ginny Ashworth of Westbrookville and Linda Bush and husband Parshall of Athens, GA; grandchildren Dana, Heather, Steven, Aaron, Jason and Rachel; and nephew Daniel Bush.

Memorial services will be held Sunday, March 15, at 12 noon at the Westbrookville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Louise Thomas officiating. Interment will take place at Westbrookville Cemetery.

William Hatton of Youngsville, NY, a retired truck driver for Poley Paving of Liberty, NY, died Tuesday, February 24, 2009 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY. He was 80.

The son of Fred and Margaret Quinn Hatton, he was born December 19, 1928 in Queens, NY.

He was the widower of Evelyn Wood Hatton who passed away March 14, 2003.

Mr. Hatton was a member of the Youngsville Fire Department, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving from 1946 to 1949.

He is survived by his children, William Hatton of Bethel, NY, LuAnn Youmans of Youngsville, Karen Werlau and husband Fred of Youngsville and June Hatton and fiancé Lou Monteleone of Eldred, NY; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Werlau, Eric Youmans, Sara Werlau, Jessica Youmans, Brett Youmans, William Hatton and Melanie Werlau; and one great-grandchild, Lucas Werlau.

There will be no services.

James Lassley of Beach Lake, PA, a retired PennDOT employee and a lifelong resident of the area, died on Friday, February 20, 2009. He was 75.

The son of the late John and Minnie Lassley Sr., he was born March 29, 1933 in Atco, PA. James served during the Korean Conflict in the US Army. He was a member of the Delaware Valley Grange and the Northern Wayne Democrats.

Survivors include his wife Janet Lassley; son Bruce Lassley and wife Lynda; daughter Linda Hinaman; granddaughters Lynette Huffman and husband Justin and Stefanie Egger and husband Aaron; three great grandchildren; brothers Frank Lassley and John Lassley Jr. and wife Alice; brother in law Emory Rolston; and several nieces and nephews.

James is predeceased by a sister, Mildred Rolston.

A graveside service was held Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the Milanville Cemetery, Milanville, PA. Pastor Phyllis Haynes officiated. Donations can be made to the donor’s choice.


James Joseph McGarry III of Highland Lake, NY departed this life for eternal rest on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at home. He was 65.

James was born October 28, 1943 in the Bronx, NY, to the late James J. McGarry II and Dorothy McGarry.

He was a resident of Highland Lake for 19 years. He served on the U.S.S. Fulton for the Navy from 1962-1966. He was a retired custodian engineer for the Board of Education, City of New York; past Commander for the Board of Ed., American Legion Post #1088 in the Bronx; a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus (1961-present); member of V.F.W. Post #161 and the Elks Lodge, both of Port Jervis, NY.

James is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ann McGarry; sons James J. McGarry IV and John McGarry and wife Nadia, all of Yulan, NY; daughters Ann Marie Corcoran and fiance Thomas Beals of Highland Lake, Dee Dey and husband Cary of Mt. Hope, NY, Catherine McGarry and fiance Andrew Gross of Highland Lake; nine grandchildren, John, Amanda, Colleen, Ashley, John Jr., Kaitlyn, Cody, Wyatt and Tyler; sister-in-law Frances Barile and husband Alfred of the Bronx; brothers Kenneth McGarry and wife Muriel and Dennis McGarry and wife Linda of New Jersey; nephew Richard Barrett and wife Andrea; many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation was held Friday, February 27, at the Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home, Barryville, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, February 28, at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, Yulan. Burial followed in the parish cemetery in Eldred, NY.


John Charles Mullen, 70 of Fayetteville, NC, formerly of Honesdale, PA, died peacefully in his sleep on February 19, 2009. He was 70.

Born in Warwick, NY on April 19, 1938 he was the son of the late Charles and Mary Mullen.

He was a graduate of Honesdale Catholic High School and worked as a mechanic in many Honesdale garages including: Owl Chrysler, Merv’s Garage and Wayne Motors. He is survived by his wife of 14 years, the former Rita Lucas; children Patricia Abicht and husband Everett of Hawley, PA, Mary Anne Hafler and husband Brian of Honesdale and Edmund Mullen and wife Lisa of Woodstock, GA; grandchildren Dannielle and Matthew Hafler of Honesdale, Ernest Abicht of Hawley and Delaney Muller of Newark, DE; siblings Mary (Marie) Rollison of Cherry Ridge, PA, Grace Davis of Milanville, PA, twin sister Joan Vaverchak of Jordan, NY and Joseph Mullen of Fayetteville, NC; sister in law Ethel Kingston of Scranton, PA; an aunt, Ginny Odom of New Jersey; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

John was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Susanna Louise Jones who passed away March 7, 1993 and two sons Jeffrey Allen and John Charles Jr.

As per his request, cremation was held in Fayetteville, NC. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Gertrude L. Smith, a lifetime area resident, passed away at her home in White Lake, NY on Sunday February 22, 2009. She was 94 years of age.

Born on October 12, 1914 in Smallwood, NY, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Lillian Mattison Brucher.

Gertrude retired from Monticello Greenhouse in Monticello, NY after 30 years. She was the widow of John V. Smith, who died in 1978.

Survivors include son Ronald Smith and wife Clare of White Lake; daughters Marjorie Ward of Charlotte, NC and Donna Richards and husband Benjamin Richards III of Monticello; sister Marion Campbell and husband, Robert of Tacoma, WA; and three grandchildren, Adam V. Smith, Wendy Sellers and Shawn Ward.

A granddaughter, Robin Richards, predeceased her.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 26 at Ramsay’s Funeral Home, Kauneonga Lake, NY. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery, Bethel, NY.
