ELSIE E. BISLAND

Elsie E. Bisland of Bradenton, FL and formerly of Port Jervis, NY, passed away February 6, 2009 in Florida. She was 89.

She was born on April 22, 1919 in Boston, MA, the daughter of the late August and Anna Carlson Sjoquist. She was predeceased by her husbands, Edward Bisland, Jr. and Bernard O’Neill.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol O’Neill of Bradenton, FL; sisters Alice Westfall of Port Jervis and Edith Nemeth of Boston; step-sons Roger Bisland of Glen Spey, NY and Alfred Bisland of Panama City, FL and several nieces and nephews.

Spring interment will take place at Glen Spey Cemetery, Glen Spey. Memorial services will be announced at a later date.


CARL F. ESSELMANN

Carl F. Esselmann, a lifetime resident of Kenoza Lake, NY, passed away on February 14, 2009 in Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris, NY. He was 82.

The son of Frederick and Helen Hust Esselmann, he was born May 18, 1926 in Kenoza Lake.

Carl was a retired dairy farmer and former employee of the Town of Delaware Highway Department. He was a member of the Kenoza Lake Fire Company for over 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Allgeier Esselmann, at home; son Douglas Esselmann of New York City; daughter Marian Hosking and husband, David of White Sulphur Springs, NY; sister Betty Girrbach and husband Oscar of Kenoza Lake; grandchildren Allison Hosking and Amy Hosking; nieces and nephews; and friend Frederick Haas and wife Debbie.

He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Susan Marie Esselmann; and a nephew, Fred Hubert.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 17, at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Jeffersonville, NY with Pastor Brigette LeConey officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Youngsville, NY.

Memorial contributions may be made to Kenoza Lake Fire Company or the Jeffersonville Volunteer First Aid Squad.


JOHN J. JABLKOWSKI

John J. Jablkowski of Port Charlotte, FL, formerly of Barryville, NY, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2009 after his battle with cancer. He was 64.

John was born on August 22, 1945 in Jersey City, NJ.

He graduated from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, IA. He married his wife, Carole on June 17, 1983 and lived in Barryville, where he and his wife owned T&H Bridals in Port Jervis, NY. John was an avid trout fisherman and enjoyed their home on the Delaware River.

He moved to Port Charlotte in 2000 where he volunteered at the Cultural Center repairing sewing machines and calling bingo. He was a member of the Port Charlotte Moose Lodge 2121.

John is survived by his wife, Carole; step daughter Lisa; grandchildren Amanda, Antal and Alexander; his mother, Helen; sister Carol and brother, Ted.

At John’s request, no services will be held.

EDWARD KOVALEFSKY

Edward Kovalefsky of New Hampton, NY, died February 13, 2009 at Middletown Park Manor. He was 83.

He was born December 19, 1925 in Silver Lake, PA to the late Adam and Minnie Suplinski Kovalefsky. He married Shirley Casey in Hop Bottom, PA on October 29, 1949.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley at home; son Edward and wife Patricia of Albany, NY; daughters Patricia and husband Harold “Chick” Morris of Monroe, NY and Barbara and husband John Davidowsky of Beach Lake, PA; brother Rudolph “Rudy” and wife Marlene of Blakeslee, PA; sisters Olga Kropa of Scranton, PA, Bertha Krueger of Pittsburgh, PA and Dorothy Bowen and husband Raymond of Rochester, NY; grandchildren Chrissy, Ed, Erica, David, and Lauren; one great-grandchild; and two godchildren.

Ed was predeceased by his granddaughter Lynne Morris on September 11, 2001.

A family statement reads, “Ed was a great Dad and grandfather (Pop Pop). He loved horses and baseball (the NY Mets) and was always happiest when children were around. Polka music brought him joy.”

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

KATELYN N. MARTIBELLO

Katelyn N. Martibello of Greeley, PA, a college freshman at Edinboro University, passed away in a car accident on Saturday, February 14, 2009 in Erie, PA. She was 19.

The daughter of Daryl Schlottmann and Kathleen Martibello-Stieff, she was born January 4, 1990 in Queens, NY. She was a graduate of North Pocono High School and a member of Sigma Alpha Lota music sorority at Edinboro University.

A family statement reads: “Katelyn was a special young lady with her whole life in front of her. She was taken from us too young; our hearts will always be broken. We miss her so deeply.”

Survivors include her father Darly Schlottmann and wife Bonnie of Greeley; her mother Kathleen Martibello-Stieff and husband Wayne Stieff of Madison Township, PA; grandfather Christian Schlottmann; grandparents Thomas and Mabel Stranahan Martibello; step grandparents Rita and Robert R. Davis; uncles Steven Schlottmann and Matthew Schlottmann and wife Betsy; aunts Grayce Schulz and husband Richard, Doryce Smith and Margaret Sorrentino and husband Carl; many cousins including Joseph and Emily; and two great uncles.

She is predeceased by grandmother Marian Osman Schlottmann.

Friends are invited to call on Thursday February 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Friday February 20 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 90 Main St., Narrowsburg, NY. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Phyllis Haynes officiating.

Burial will be in Glen Dyberry Cemetery, Honesdale, PA.

WENDELL C. ‘WENDY’ REAFLER

Wendell C. “Wendy” Reafler of Hawley, PA died Friday, February 13, 2009 at home. She was 90.

Born March 18, 1918, in Winterville, GA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph P. and Mozelle (Hansford) Crowley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Martin A. Reafler, in 1975.

She was a graduate of University of Georgia and East Stroudsburg State College. She was an elementary school teacher for 20 years for Wallenpaupack Area School District. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and the Willing Workers and the Order of the Eastern Star. An avid gardener and cook, Wendy was a loving mother and grandmother.

She is survived by daughters Marcia and husband David Dunsmore of Hawley and Debbie and husband Hugh Murray of Beach Lake, PA; grandchildren Stuart Dunsmore of Houston, TX and Emily Dunsmore of Auckland, NZ; sisters Alene Cassidy of Woodstock, GA and Martha Sue Smith of Atlanta, GA; brothers Tunis Crowley of Griffin, GA and Ronald Crowley of Madison, AL; and sister-in-law Louise Crowley of Atlanta, GA.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Frances Green; and a brother, Joseph Crowley.

The memorial service was on Tuesday, February 17 at Hawley United Methodist Church with Rev. Martin L. Cox Jr., Pastor, officiating. Private cremation was held at Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.

CLARA V. SCHMALZLE

Clara V. Schmalzle, late of Barryville, NY, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Milford Senior Care Facility, Milford, PA. She was 85.

She was born November 16, 1923 in Dunmore, PA, the daughter of the late Matthew H. Vollmer and Hazel B. Swendsen Vollmer. Clara was married to the late Lewis J. Schmalzle for over 60 years.

She was a retired home economics and health teacher for Eldred Central School, Eldred, NY. Clara was a member of the Barryville United Methodist Church for over 50 years, and lay preacher of the church; a member and past Matron of River Valley Chapter, O.E.S. #33, Port Jervis, NY; the Sullivan County of Home Economics Teachers; the New York State United Teachers Association; the International Skamper Camper Club; and a life member of the Yulan Rod and Gun Club.

A family statement reads: “Mom loved to sew, cook, hunt, fish and camp, but above all, family was most important.”

She is survived by daughters Sharon Barnes and husband Larry of Gouldsboro, ME and Ginny Dudko and husband William of Sparrowbush, NY; son Donald L. Schmalzle and his wife Cindy of Ellenville, NY; grandchildren Jennifer, Tricia, Amy and Laura; five great-grandchildren; brothers Cecil Vollmer of Jacksonville, FL and Paul Vollmer of Dunnellon, FL; sister Carol Swingle of Ann Arbor, MI; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Vera Balfantz.

Friends may call Friday, February 13, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, 154 E. Main St., Port Jervis, NY. Eastern Star services will be held Friday evening at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 14, at the Barryville United Methodist Church with The Rev. Linda Bohs officiating. Interment was private.
