Gillow Clark workshop: ‘Characters Make the Scene’

HONESDALE, PA — Author Clara Gillow Clark will lead Characters Make the Scene, a workshop “for people who really want to write,” on Friday, February 28 from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. The snow date is March 4.

Gillow Clark will share how to craft irresistible characters and build scenes that envelop the characters.

“Learning to write is a lot like learning to play a musical instrument. It takes practice and a few of those amazing ‘Aha’ moments when suddenly you catch on. Read a lot. Write a lot. And don’t give up,” Clark said.

In part one, Gillow Clark will walk participants through creating two character sketches. They will share, discuss and get constructive criticism on two new protagonists for a story they are working on. In part two, Gillow Clark will discuss what is and isn’t a scene and why.

The donation is $30 for Wayne County Arts Alliance members, $45 for non-members. In addition, participants may submit up to 10 pages of a current work for editing for another $30. Manuscripts can be brought to the workshop, along with synopses for longer works. Submissions must be double-spaced in 12-point type. Include a stamped, self-addressed envelope the size of your manuscript for return.

Gillow Clark’s published works include “Annie’s Choice,” “Nellie Bishop” and “Hill Hawk Hattie. Her most recent novel, “The Secrets of Greymoor,” is scheduled for release February 2009 and participants of the workshop will receive a complimentary copy.
