Sullivan West girls and Liberty boys clinch indoor division titles

By RICHARD A. ROSS

WEST POINT, NY — “‘The time has come,’ the Walrus said, ‘to talk of many things...’”

Locally, those things include indoor track division titles, not “cabbages and kings” as Lewis Carroll alluded to in “Through the Looking Glass.”

Peering through a camera lens provided insights into the indoor track circuit on January 30 as the Sullivan West girls and the Liberty boys came into the A format meet with 14-0 records. This meet figured to be the defining one for clinching their Division V titles.

That became a reality when it was announced that a prior meet, which had been cancelled, would not be made up. With Liberty ahead of second place Pine Plains (11-3) and Sullivan West leading Tri-Valley (12-2) in the standings, the division titles were assured regardless of this meet’s outcome.

That said, each team put forth a major effort and emerged undefeated by vanquishing all seven teams in their division, for a record of 21-0.

Sullivan West rode its strength in the hurdles, sprints, 3000 and 1000 and jumping events to defeat Tri-Valley. The Lady Bulldogs were missing Dani Myers, but Tri-Valley was hurt even more by the ongoing loss of Rachel Sanborn, who may have a stress fracture. Tri-Valley hopes Sanborn will be back in time for the Lady Bears to try and defend their Section Nine title.

Liberty’s boys excelled in the jumping events and in the sprints. Sullivan West battled back with great performances in the distance events, the 3200 and 1600 relay, but they couldn’t overtake the Indians. Liberty looks even stronger than a year ago when it finished as runner up in Section Nine.

Here are some Sullivan County results (place finishes are by state classifications of divisions). All of Sullivan County schools except Monticello are in the smaller division.
