FRANK ALIBERTI

Frank Aliberti, a resident of Long Eddy, NY, since 1982, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2009, at Good Samaritan Hospital, in Suffern, NY. He was 86.

Born June 20, 1922 in Brooklyn, he was retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Brooklyn, and lived most of his life in Canarsie, Brooklyn.

Frank was a decorated World War II combat veteran, who battled in Central Europe, and served his country until 1946.

A family statement reads: “Frank was a gentle and compassionate man who loved to garden, take care of his home, and enjoyed his retirement in the countryside with his wife. Loved by all who knew him, he will be deeply missed, but never forgotten. Friends and family will forever hold a special place in their hearts for Frank, and his grandchildren will always love ‘Poppy Frank’.”

Survivors include his wife Audrey of Long Eddy; daughter Marion of Brooklyn; son Frank and wife Susan of Ridge, NY; brothers Sam and his wife Marion of New Jersey, John of Staten Island, Joseph and wife Gemma of Long Island, Benny and wife Rose of Staten Island; brother-in-law Louie of Staton Island; stepdaughter Arline Arnold of Tucson, AZ; stepsons Ron Arnold of Queens, Arther Arnold and wife Sara of New York, NY, Jeffrey Arnold and wife Helen of Plainview, NY, Alan Arnold and wife Deborah of Long Eddy; grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many loving friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie, in 1959; and sisters Mary and Anna.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 14, at Chapey & Son Funeral Home, Bethpage, NY. A military service followed at Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.


CHRISTINE BERTOLINO

Christine Bertolino of Barryville NY a longtime resident, passed away on Monday, January 19, 2009 at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Bronx. NY. She was 42.

The daughter of Andrew and Pat Feighery Friedrich, she was born January 1, 1967 in Queens, NY. She was married for 14 years to Salvatore Bertolino,

Christine was a member of St. Anthony’s of Padua R.C. Church and of the PTA for Eldred school district and a Brownie leader. A family statement reads, “Christine was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was good hearted and kind to everyone. She will be greatly missed by everyone.”

Survivors include her husband Salvatore and daughter Charley, at home; her parents Andrew and Pat Friedrich; and one brother, Keith Friedrich, all of Highland Lake, NY.

Friends are invited to call on Friday, January 23 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, January 24 from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home, Route 97, Barryville.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 24 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony’s of Padua R.C. Church, Yulan, NY. Father Anthony Moore, OFM will officiate. Christian burial will take place in the parish cemetery.

SUZANNA MELICHAREK

Suzanna Melicharek of Jeffersonville, NY, a retired office manager and an area resident since 1990, died Friday, January 9, 2009 at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty, NY. She was 92.

The daughter of the late Martin and Elizabeth Ryba Melicharek, she was born December 11, 1916 in Manhattan.

She was a member of the Holy Trinity Slovak Church in New York City.

She is survived by sister Olga Cutler of Jeffersonville, NY; sister-in-law Verna Melicharek; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by brother, Martin Melicharek; and brother-in-law, William Cutler Sr.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Moravian Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.

ALEXANDER DAVID NORRIS

Alexander David Norris of Barefoot Bay, Florida and formerly of Westbrookville, NY, passed away Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at his home. He was 77.

He was born on April 24, 1931 at Oceanside, NY, the son of the late Alexander and Jessie Williamson Norris.

David was a retired journeyman for IBEW Local Union #363, Rockland County, NY. He was a member of the Friendship Christian Community Church at Sebastian, FL and veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Army.

A family statement reads: “Chockie was a much loved family man who enjoyed football, fishing, camping and the simple pleasures of life. He was a man of integrity with a great sense of humor. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched, his family, friends and fellow electrical brothers.”

He is survived by his wife, Joan M. Leer Norris at home; son William Norris and wife, Gail of Hilliard, FL; daughters Kathleen Perry and husband Paul of Westbrookville, NY and Wendy Ferrara and husband Anthony of Sparrowbush, NY; brother John W. Norris of Sayeville, NY; grandchildren Trisha Fuller and her husband, Anthony, Nicholas and Jessie Ferrara, Brandon, Ryan and Tarah Norris and Mark Perry; two great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 16 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis, NY, with Kathleen Perry officiating. Interment will be private.

FAITH AGNES ROSLER

Faith Agnes (Balles) Rosler of Honesdale, PA died Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center. She was 86.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank James Rosler, who died October 1, 1979. The couple married November 17, 1943.

Born December 4, 1922 in Texas Township, PA, she was the daughter and last surviving family member of Charles and Agnes Bried Balles.

A 1941 graduate of Honesdale Catholic High School, she was a telephone operator from 1942 to 1961 and later worked for the former Sears Roebuck Co. in Honesdale as a sales clerk. Faith was an active member of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Honesdale; a member of the Catholic Daughters of Americas, Court St. Martin; and volunteered at Ellen Memorial where she prayed the rosary and played cards with residents. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

Surviving are sons Frank Michael Rosler of Honesdale, Thomas Rosler and wife Claire of Amsterdam, NY and Jeffrey Rosler and wife Karen of Beach Lake, PA; daughter Mary Lynn Minnich and husband Darrell of Honesdale; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sister Mary Lou Obermeier.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, January 21 at St. Mary Magdalen Church. Interment followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

STANLEY J. SEGAL

Stanley J. Segal died on January 18, 2009. He was 81.

Stanley was born on January 19, 1926. He was a retired Hunter College professor and clinical psychologist in private practice. He was a resident of New York City, Damascus, PA, and Nevis, WI.

Stanley was a dedicated parent, with Isabelle, of Eric Segal and Karen Shoplik and Amy and Everett Shorey; and a doting grandfather of Ella, Margot, and Rachel. He was the devoted partner of Sheldon Soffer for 28 years.

JOHN N. ‘BUD’ SMITH JR

John N.”Bud” Smith, Jr. of Matamoras, PA, died Tuesday, January 13, 2009, at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 80.

He was born May 23, 1928 in Port Jervis, NY, the son of the late John Nelson Sr. and the late Helen Decker Smith. He married Janice Long on August 15, 1954 in Port Jervis.

Bud was a truck driver for Rupp Southern Tier and a member of the Teamsters Local #445 Newburgh, NY. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Matamoras Rod & Gun Club.

A family statement reads: “Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He loved spending time with his friends at the Mayor’s Corner and watching Penn State Football and Joe Paterno. He loved Jody’s Shelties and, most of all, his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Janice Long Smith at home; son Gary Smith and wife, Kathy of Sparrowbush, NY; daughter, JoEllen “Jodi” Haas and husband Tony of Matamoras; brother Alvah Smith and wife Ruth of Matamoras; sister Kathy Oathout and husband Russell of St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren: Andrew John, Alexandra and Matthew Smith; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by sisters Iola May Smith, Helen Smith Masanotti, Flora Smith and Ella Smith Millspaugh.

Funeral services were private at the convenience of the family. Cremation was at H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg, PA.

LAWRENCE M. WARD

Lawrence M. Ward of Glen Spey, NY, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2009 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis, NY. He was 44.

He was born December 3, 1964 at Delhi, NY, the son of the late Gerald H. Ward and Marjorie Hunt Houck, who survives.

Larry was a supervisor in the shipping department at Andmore Sportswear, Port Jervis. A family statement reads: “Larry was an avid hockey fan with his favorite team being the Detroit Red Wings, but most of all he adored his children and having fun with his friends and family.”

Larry is survived by his wife, Jeannette McCabe Ward, at home; daughters Taylor and Miranda, at home; his mother of Delhi, NY; brothers Jerry Ward and wife Cindy of Port Jervis, Darryl Ward and wife Ann of Godeffroy, NY and William Houck Jr. and companion Jen of Eldred, NY; sisters Irma Humby and husband Dan of Frisco, TX, Jacquelyn Houck and companion Carlos of Port Jervis and Beatrice Houck and companion Arthur of Port Jervis; several nieces, nephews and close friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday January 20 at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home, Port Jervis, with the Rev. Patt Kaufmann officiating. Interment will be private.

DAVID WASSERLAUF

David Wasserlauf of White Lake, NY, died Thursday, January 15, 2009, in West Palm Beach, FL. He was 89.

Born December 11, 1919 in Swan Lake, NY, he was the son of Harry and Dora (Halpern) Wasserlauf.

David was a veteran of World War II, a poultry farmer and a carpenter. He was a charter member of the Bethel Ambulance Corps, a volunteer of the White Lake Fire Dept. and served as president of Temple Beth-El in Kauneonga Lake, NY. David Wasserlauf was an inspiration and a role model for everyone fortunate to know him.

David is survived by his wife, Mildred; children Frances Abilock and husband Louis, Harold and Robert and wife Karen; and five grandchildren, Tanya, Devani, Jessica, Daniel and Zoe.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 18, at the Joseph N. Garlick Funeral Home, 388 Broadway, Monticello, NY. Burial followed at the Congregation Beth-El Cemetery in Bethel, NY.
