Crookston packs Calkins
New concert series sells out with first act
By SANDY LONG
BEACH LAKE, PA The frosty winter air and remote rural location didnt keep the crowds away from Calkins Creek Vineyard, where the first RiverFolk Concert featuring Ithaca-based artist Joe Crookston was a resounding success.
Crookston shared evocative songs crafted from his travels throughout New York State, during which he collected stories from those he met in towns like Elmira. His rich vocals, skillful delivery and engaging personality gave listeners a memorable musical experience to enrich the mind and heart.
Producer Jill Padua, of Jills Kitchen in Narrowsburg, NY, began to pursue the idea for the concerts after WJFF radios Angela Page (Folk Plus) suggested that she consider hosting intimate concerts in her home. Padua spoke with others at a Northeast Regional Folk Alliance conference in November to learn all she could about such events, which are often held at locations such as churches and libraries. Folk singer Susan DeVita, who has a home in the region, suggested Calkins Creek Vineyard and Padua contacted them the following day.
They were thrilled! said Padua, who is extremely pleased with the venue, which holds about 100 people. Crookston, too, made positive remarks about the beautiful facility and highly responsive audience. Artists want to be heard, and these house concerts give them the opportunity to present their work in an intimate setting with an appreciative audience, said Padua.
Padua attributes the events success partly to the generous support she received from WJFF, Peter Florance of Voodoo Pickups, Beach Lake Bread, Calkins Creamery, Rent-E-Vent of Rent-E-Quip and Dorene Warner of Wdesign. The concert was a partial fundraiser that benefited WJFF and the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance. Performers are paid, but agree to donate a portion of proceeds to the organizations being supported.
Well-known throughout the region for her successful catering business, Padua plans to pursue the shows during the quieter months of the year. I expect to produce shows from fall through spring, said Padua. Summer is way too busy for me.
Additional concerts have been scheduled and the next one, featuring David Roth ( www.davidrothmusic.com ) is already halfway to being sold out. Visit www.jillskitchen.com/riverfolk to learn more.
