GEORGE H. BUDD
George H. Budd of Middletown, NY, died Friday, December 19, 2008 at St. Teresas Nursing Home, Middletown. He was 73.
George was born in Middletown on May 12, 1935, the son of the late George and Jane Gray Henry Budd.
After graduating from Middletown High School, George joined the U.S. Air Force and served 20 years during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired as a security guard for Horton Hospital and Kolmar Laboratories, Port Jervis, NY. He was a member of the Floyd Carter American Legion Post #1079, Otisville, NY, a past president of Otisville/Mt. Hope Volunteer Ambulance Corps and a member of the Ontario Engine and Hose Company #5.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn M. Clark Budd, at home; children Beth Koch and husband Alan, Sara Budd of Middletown, Marilieina Bopp of Fallsburg, NY, Gary Budd and wife Karen of Grahamsville, NY and Randy Budd and wife Andrea of Sparrowbush, NY; stepchildren Doreen Patterson and husband Dave of Middletown, Ralph Brink and wife Kim of Bloomingburg, NY, Linn Brink of Syracuse, NY, Connie Hauser of Monroe, NY, Tina Leidich and husband Rick of Middletown and Jeff Brink of Middletown; siblings Gary Budd and wife Jackie and Dennis Budd and wife Jennifer, all of the state of Florida, David Budd and wife Sherri of Middletown, Mary Jean Edwards and husband Robert of Middletown, Wendy English and husband Kerry of Goshen; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 15 step grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Sharon Virginia Post, who died October 15, 1978; and brother, Alan Budd.
American Legion and funeral services were on Monday, December 22 at Morse Funeral Home, Inc., Middletown, NY. Following cremation, Georges cremains were interred in the Orange County Veterans Cemetery, Goshen, NY, with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to help defray funeral costs.
RICHARD E. HAFLER
Richard E. Hafler, a resident of Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale, PA, died Monday, December 15, 2008 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 86.
Mr. Hafler was born February 3, 1922 in Honesdale, PA, the son of the late Ernest and Anna Stinnard Hafler.
He served in the army during World War II. He was a cook at the former Maple City Restaurant in Honesdale and worked at Wayne Memorial facilities services and PennDot Route 84 rest stop. He also did painting and carpentry.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Helen M. (Arthur) Lyons Turner Hafler; one daughter, Donna Haas of Shohola, PA; and one son, Gary Hafler of Honesdale; four stepsons, Allan Lyons of Beach Lake, PA, Ronald Lyons of NC; Michael Turner of NC and Douglas Turner of Honesdale; and one step daughter, Vera Halstead of Honesdale; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Viola Gilpin Hafler.
A memorial service was held at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale on Sunday, December 21.
Cremation was at Lake Region Crematory in Lake Ariel, PA with interment at Indian Orchard Cemetery in Indian Orchard, PA.
FREDERICK H. HERMANN
Frederick H. Hermann of Callicoon, NY, a retired dairy farmer and former Town of Delaware Town Clerk and a lifetime area resident, died Monday, December 15, 2008 at Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe, NY. He was 90.
Son of the late Walter and Julia Miller Hermann, he was born June 20, 1918 in Callicoon.
He was a leader for 4-H, reserve member of the Callicoon Volunteer Fire Department, member of the Sullivan County Cooperative Extension and member of the Upper Delaware Ambulance Corps.
Survivors include his wife Eileen Breiner Hermann at home; daughters Suzanne Hennig and husband William of Cochecton, NY, Kathleen Aleschus of Callicoon and Patricia Lakits and husband Ken of California; sons Frederick of Washington state, Glenn Hermann and fiance Cathy Barnes of Cochecton, Chris Hermann and wife Jennifer of Callicoon and Jaime Hermann and wife Jennifer of Georgia; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his former wife, Margot Zetzman; two brothers, Paul and Quinton; and two sisters, Matilda and Helen.
Services were on Thursday, December 18 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, Callicoon, with the Rev. Nancy Asbury officiating.
Burial was in Hortonville Cemetery, Hortonville, NY.

LEONA LEE KMIECZAK
Leona Lee Kmieczak of Welcome Lake, PA, a longtime resident of the area, passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. She was 91.
The daughter of the late John and Marie Simko Lancey, she was born November 17, 1917 in Pittsburgh, PA.
Lee attended St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church, Narrowsburg, NY. She was a member of the Welcome Lake Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and of the Tusten Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Lee was a former tax collector for the Town of Lackawaxen, PA and she worked at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance in Narrowsburg, NY.
She is survived by her two sons, Wayne Kmieczak and wife Gail of Hawley, PA and Barry Kmieczak and wife Bette of Lowell, ME; two sisters, Marge VanWinkle and Dorothy Burton, brother Jack Lancey; four grandchildren, Kristen Pizzo, Jessica Moran, Matthew Kmieczak and Amity Hlasney; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Herbert Kmieczak, who passed away in 1972.
Graveside services will he held on Saturday December 27 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis Cemetery, Narrowsburg. Father William Scully O.F.M. will officiate.
BETTY D. STARR
Betty D. Starr of Lake Huntington, NY, a retired luncheonette manager and longtime area resident, passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2008 at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris, NY. She was 81.
The daughter of the late Harry Edwin and Mae Margaret Sager Starr, she was born August 31, 1927 in Girardville, PA.
Betty had been the luncheonette manager at the Chester Arms Pharmacy in Chester, PA.
Survivors include one son, Brian Starr of Lake Huntington, NY; two daughters, Cheryl Becker of Narrowsburg, NY, and Barbara Cartwright of Harrisburg, PA; one sister, Jean Fasano of Aston, PA; one grandson, Paul Becker and wife Connie of Brightwaters, NY; three granddaughters, Emily Lanese and husband Matthew of San Diego, CA, Jennifer Zechman and husband Scott of Elizabethtown, PA and Melissa Keckler of the state of Florida; one sister-in-law, Lois Starr of Aston; five great-grandchildren, Casey and Samantha Becker, Justin Zechman, and Bailey and Kayla Keckler; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was predeceased by two sisters, Stella Starr and Doris Starr, and two brothers, Harry Edwin Starr II and Kenneth Starr.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
