Old marks: clues left by our great-grandparents

Most of us have been near some portion of the remnants of the D&H Canal and have been able to spot some of the surviving rock work. Some areas have even been preserved by the National Park Service and other agencies and groups. During the last century, the canal had a big influence on the area, and bits of coal along the riverbank and remnants of bluestone quarries tell a story of some of these products that were moved along the canal.

Comment invited on forest protection

NEW YORK STATE—The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has proposed making permanent a regulation to restrict the import, sale and transport of untreated firewood to aid in the fight against the spread of tree-killing pests and diseases.

A public comment period on the DEC’s proposal runs through February 9, 2009. The DEC encourages interested parties to weigh in on the proposal—which can be viewed on the DEC website—at two public hearings or through written comments.
