River

Night by the River

By DOROTHY HARTZ

I stop

To drink

In the full moon

In the water.

It’s here as if waiting—

A heron.

I have a good look

before it unlocks the moment

before it unlands

before it sweeps the velvet sky

with sharp grey feathers.

I Am

By PATRICIA KETT

I am a red spiral wolf sigh

in a ’57 Thunderbird.

I am the river winding past

a flowering pear tree

moving the loss of a child

to peace.
