Basketball, wrestling and indoor track on tap in first full week of winter sports action

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY—Icy roads, blustery days and freezing temperatures are enough to make one shiver and shake. But before you bury your head under the covers or opt to hibernate until spring, remember that winter brings fiery sports action that counters the unwelcome weather, heats the blood and enlivens the spirit.

With Thanksgiving now in the rearview mirror, action gets underway for Sullivan County schools with boys and girls basketball, indoor track and wrestling duals.

Freezing temperatures will soon bring snow to ski hills and area ski teams will begin their downhill slalom and giant slalom races.

‘Y’ play

Monticello YMCA Basketball League begins its first year

MONTICELLO, NY—The YMCA Basketball League will inaugurate its first season, which begins in January 2009. Registration began on November 29.

The league is a five-on-five adult recreational league that plays Sundays at the Monticello Central School gymnasiums. Teams will play one to two games a week. The regular season consists of a minimum 14-game schedule, with a playoff tournament. Certified officials and referees will be in attendance at all games.

ELDRED, NY—And so the season began. With little fanfare, and armed with precious little practice and scrimmage experience, the Lady Wildcats from Livingston Manor took to the court on December 1 to take on a familiar rival in the Lady Blue Devils from Roscoe in the Eldred tournament. Livingston Manor prevailed by the score of 47-29.

Later in the evening, tournament host Eldred defeated Fallsburg 40-35.

Manor and Eldred will play for the tournament championship on December 5 after Roscoe and Fallsburg duke it out in the consolation round.
