CineArt features ‘The Secret Life of Bees’

CALLICOON, NY — The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and the Callicoon Theatre will present Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Secret Life of Bees,” based on Sue Monk Kidd’s New York Times bestselling novel, starting Friday, December 12. Set in the south in the mid-1960s, the film stars Dakota Fanning as 14-year-old Lily Owen, neglected by her father, who retreats to a honey farm run by an eccentric trio of sisters named May (Sophie Okonedo), June (Alicia Keys), and August (Queen Latifah).

Roger Ebert of The Chicago Sun Times says, “I have great affection for this film because it honors a novel that many people loved for good reasons. It isn’t superior, nor does it dumb it down. It sees what is good and honors it.”

“The Secret Life of Bees” is rated PG-13, and will be screened Friday, December 12 through Thursday, December 18 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Saturday, December 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Callicoon Theater, 30 Upper Main Street. Admission costs $8; Monday admission is $6.

A percentage of the profits and $1 per person from ticket sales benefit the programs and services of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County. CineArt is a partnership between Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and the Callicoon Theater that promotes and screens independent, foreign, and art films.
