Narrowsburg garage fetches high price

New owner plans makeover

By FRITZ MAYER

NARROWSBURG, NY — Despite the weak real estate market, there is a strong demand for commercial property in Narrowsburg. That was the assessment of Tony Ritter, fishing guide and chairman of the zoning board of appeals, as he spoke at the Tusten town meeting on November 10 about the sale of the bus garage on Bridge Street.

The empty building, which was put on the market about three weeks ago, is owned by the Sullivan West School District. The initial asking price was $125,000. But there was a lot of interest, and several offers came quickly. The school district asked all interested parties to submit their “best and highest” offers in sealed bids, which were opened at the Jeffersonville School on November 10. The highest bid came in at $228,000, with the next highest just $2,000 below that.

Grady Avant, who owns the Atelier Homme clothing store on Main Street and who is an investor in Roasters, put forward the highest bid. Avant said he has had his eye on the property for a while and is looking forward to making improvements to the building, such as updating the electric service and installing a new heating system.

He said the building will be used for events, such as a winter farmers market, antique auctions, weddings and other gatherings that require a large space. Avant said he hopes it will help bring people into town and be a positive addition to the community.
