World War II vet honored in rededication

HAWLEY, PA — There will be a ceremony to rededicate the Hawley Senior Center as the Robert J. Drake Senior Community Center on Monday, November 10. The ceremony will occur from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., followed by music provided by Virgil Goble, a Lakeville native who enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1942 at the age of 19.

After World War II, Drake, who served with his brothers Joseph and Edward, was a prime mover in establishing the local VFW Post 5823. He received serious wounds in the Pacific theatre of operations, and died on September 18, 1965 from war-related injuries. He is survived by his wife Verna (Altemier); three children, Kathleen, Susan and Robert; and five grandchildren. In November, 1967 the post, which overlooks Bingham Park and the Lackawaxen River, was named the Robert J. Drake Memorial Post 5823.

About 35 years ago, the post started renting the building to the county for senior citizen programs. Today, the VFW and its members continue their tradition of service to others by donating the land and the building specifically for use by the senior citizens of the Hawley area. The date was chosen as fitting to celebrate Drake’s life and service, and the gift of Veterans to the senior citizens in our community.

In addition to the ceremony and music, there will be tables providing information on Medicare, prescription assistance and supplemental health insurance issues; information from Stephens Pharmacy on new products and services; craft and exercise classes; and bingo and mahjong.
