A hike in the dark

CLARYVILLE, NY — A unique nighttime hike offering a chance for star gazing and watching nocturnal animals will take place at Frost Valley YMCA on Saturday, November 1 starting at 6:00 p.m.

Biologist Reid Bauer of Frost Valley will lead the hike, helping participants overcome a fear of the dark by exploring how humans and animals adapt to the nighttime environment. The excursion will also be dedicated to learning how to view planets, stars and constellations with both the naked eye and telescopes, which will be provided.

The hike also includes a search for evening wildlife such as beavers and bats around Frost Valley’s Lake Cole. A stop at Frost Valley’s Raptor Center is planned to observe and learn more about these rescued night predators. The hike is on very easy terrain and will be of relatively short walking duration.

For more information email rbauer@frostvalley.org or call 845/985-2291, ext. 397. Space is limited to 30 participants.
