WALTER HENRY BLOOMER JR

Walter Henry Bloomer Jr. of Sparrowbush, NY, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Northern Manor Nursing Home. He was 90.

He was born September 13, 1918 in Sparrowbush, the son of the late Walter Henry Sr. and Harriet Chambers Bloomer. He was married for 53 years to his loving wife, Barbara Bloomer.

He was a member of the Sparrowbush United Methodist Church, an affiliate member of Drew United Methodist Church in Port Jervis, NY, president of the Delaware Valley Prayer Fellowship, lay leader and treasurer of Sparrowbush. Walt was also a Sunday School teacher and the treasurer of the local AARP. He was a board member of the Pine Hill, Rural Valley and Laurel Grove Cemetery associations.

A family statement reads: “He was a loving husband and father who loved his children. He graduated from Port Jervis High School in 1935 and went on to Columbia University where he received a degree in Accounting. Between high school and college he worked at Eddy Farm as a golf pro. He will be greatly missed.”

Survivors include his wife at home; son David Bloomer of Sparrowbush; daughter Lynda McCreery and husband Joseph of Cuddebackville, NY; brother-in-law William Landmesser; cousins: William Morris, Robert Morris, David Morris and Robert Bloomer; and several nephews.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, October 18 at the Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush with the Rev. Robert D. Cassidy officiating.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 26, at 2:00 p.m. in the Drew United Methodist Church, Port Jervis.

CARL G. FRIBERG

Carl G. Friberg of New Windsor, NY, died October 16, 2008 at home. He was 57.

The son of Enar Henning Friberg and Dagmar Nordling, he was born November 20, 1950 in Tarrytown, NY.

He was a plumber with Local 2 in NYC. He was trustee with the Peoples Regular Baptist Church, Maybrook NY and won the Grafnecker Award for the highest grades in a four-year apprenticeship program.

Suvivors include his wife, Susan Cohen Friberg of New Windsor; his mother of Brewster, NY and father of Glen Spey, NY; children Orin Sarabia and Jason Sarabia, both of the Bronx, Carl Friberg Jr. and Sarajane Larkin, both of New Windsor; brother Enar H. Friberg, Jr. of New Windsor; sister Sonia Friberg of Glen Spey; grandchildren Cody Sarabia, Carmelo R. Torres and Eowyn R. Larkin.

He was predeceased by a brother, Roy Peter Friberg.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 20, at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. Burial followed in Gley Spey Cemetery, Lumberland, NY.


STEVE S. GALAMBOS

Steve S. Galambos of Sparrowbush, NY, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Orange Regional Medical Center Horton Campus. He was 76.

He was born December 31, 1931 in Hungary, the son of the late Mathias and Elizabeth King Galambos. He married his loving wife, Lucy Joan Galambos, on December 21, 1973 in New York City.

Survivors include his wife at home; daughter Zina Klein of Fishkill, NY; grandchildren Robert Anthony Cutrupi and wife Cynthia, Mary Carmela Cutrupi and Trent R. Klein; nephew Frank Ciano and wife Karen; five grand nieces and nephews; Zachary Doolittle, Megan Mary Ciano, Tyler Phillip Ciano, Joshua Michael Ciano, and Jenna Nicole Ciano; and one great granddaughter, Illiana Nicole Cutrupi.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 17 at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Inc., Port Jervis, NY with Rev. Joseph Iannone officiating. A private family burial followed.

EDWIN F. GETTEL JR

Edwin F. Gettel, Jr. of Narrowsburg, NY, a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, died Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale, PA. He was 73.

The son of the late Edwin F. and Anna Pless Gettel, Sr., he was born July 2, 1935 in Bethel, NY.

Edwin was a retired property superintendent for the Boy Scouts of America. He was also retired from NYSEG. He was a life member of the Kauneonga Lake Fire Dep-artment.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth Caldwell Gettel; three sons, James of Missouri, Edwin F. III of North Carolina and Bruce of Lava, NY; his sister, Doris Jones of Missouri; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

Edwin was predeceased by a daughter, Belinda-Jo.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Cremation will follow at the Maple Hill Crematory in Archbald, PA.

JOHN JOSEPH PHILLIPS

John Joseph Phillips of Beach Lake, PA died Sunday, October 19, 2008 at home.

He was born in Brooklyn to John Joseph Phillips and Anita Malerba on June 28, 1927.

He served in the Navy Air Corps and returned to marry Frances Wilma Urban. He worked for the Long Island Lighting Company for 35 years, working his way up from draftsman to supervisor of Underground Lines and Mains. He moved to Beach Lake, PA in 1984, opening an antique shop.

His model planes were featured in many magazines, the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT and the Piper Aviation Museum in Lock Haven, PA.

John is survived by his wife, Frances W. Phillips; daughters Fran Phillips and partner Terence Mulligan, Margaret Phillips and husband Peter Pellerzi, Mary and husband Daniel Thumann and Roberta Phillips and partner Chris Engel; grandsons Adam Thumann and wife Elizabeth, Philip Pellerzi, John Phillips and Ryan Phillips; granddaughters Anne Thumann and husband Josh Robbins and Victoria Phillips.

He is predeceased by his sons, John and Peter; and his daughter-in-law, Carol Phillips.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at the St. Bernard’s K.C. Church, Beach Lake, PA. Christian Burial followed in the Beach Lake Cemetery.

FLOYD H. SCHNAKENBERG

Floyd H. Schnakenberg of Honesdale, PA died Friday, October 17, 2008 at the Kindred Hospital, Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The son of the John George and Nellie M. Tiel Schnakenberg, Floyd was a lifelong resident of Wayne County.

Born in Laurella, Berlin Township, Mr. Schnakenberg attended a one-room schoolhouse in Berlin Valley and the two-room Carley Brook schoolhouse. He later graduated from Honesdale High School. He served as Oregon Township Tax Collector for the last ten years.

After retirement he served as secretary on the Oregon Township School Board (now Wayne Highlands School District); chairman of the Oregon Township Planning Commission; president, curator and board member of the Equinunk Historical Society; president of the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society; board member and membership chair of the Upper Delaware Heritage Alliance; and a member of the Wayne County Historical Society, the D & H Transportation Heritage Council, the Lacawac Sanctuary, the Deposit Historical Council, the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, The Delaware Highlands Conservancy, the Bashakill Association and others. Mr. Schnakenberg has often led walks at the Florence Shelly Preserve and elsewhere for area organizations. He has sponsored Fresh Air Fund children and has assisted Wayne County Children and Youth Services.

He is survived by several cousins and his close friends, including Marilyn Kneeland of Equinunk, PA.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, Honesdale. Interment was in the Glen Dyberry Cemetery, Honesdale.

CARLTON H. SUTLIFF

Carlton H. Sutliff of Lake Huntington, NY, a lifelong resident of the area, died on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Allied Services, Scranton, PA. He was 65 years old.

The son of the late Ivan Lewis and Helen Calkin Sutliff, he was born January 25, 1943 in Honesdale. PA.

Carlton was a farmer. He retired from Sears after 25 years of service.

A family statement read: “Carlton was a loving brother and uncle. He loved his farm and his animals. He will truly be missed.”

He is survived by sister Faye Dowling and husband Kevin of Rochester, NY; nephew Daniel Dowling and wife Sheryl of Burlington, VT; niece Karen Otwell and husband Dwight of Cary, NC; and many cousins.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 22 at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg, NY. Burial followed at Hillside Cemetery, Damascus, PA.

TED TAN

Ted Tan passed away October 14, 2008 at his home at Foster Hill Farm in Milford, PA. He was 60.

Ted was born in the Philippines on June 1, 1948, of parents who had emigrated there from China. He received training in gardening and was later apprenticed in the culinary arts at the Hilton Hotels in Manila and London. Ted operated several food service businesses, including partnering with his brother in a successful restaurant in Manila. Following his brother’s death, Ted sold his interest in the restaurant and eventually was trained as a nurse in England. He moved to the United States more than 20 years ago, where he pursued his career as a private health aide.

He came to Milford in the spring of 2003 to work as a home health aide. He undertook responsibility for household management and development of the organic vegetable garden at Foster Hill Farm. In 2008, under Tan’s management, the garden had 179 different kinds of vegetables, herbs and berries, including nine different kinds of tomatoes.

Ted organized food and beverages for charitable and social functions at the farm and elsewhere. He was widely acclaimed for his food at the annual appreciation dinner for volunteers of the Milford Enhancement Committee and the annual Foster Hill Neighbors’ Picnic at the farm.

Ted is survived by his mother, Tiu Hew Cheng in Manila; sister Rebecca and her daughter Lanee in Manila; sister Natalie Escobar and husband Ricardo and their children, Richard and Natalie Jr., in Queens; sister-in-law Daisy and children, Marzen and Marlon, in California; and Michelle Bolla and husband Raj in Houston, with children Kriya and infant son Dhuvra. He will be missed by his Milford family, as well as two cats, Gatto and Zorro, three guinea hens, 30 chickens and three rabbits.

He was predeceased by his brother, Wilfred Tan, and a sister, Teresita Tan.

A celebration of Ted’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1 at Foster Hill Farm, 2 Llama Llane, Milford, PA, 18337. Bring photos, anecdotes and reminiscences of Ted to share.


MARY ANN WHITE

Mary Ann White of Cochecton, NY, entered into rest on Saturday, October 18, 2008 in Cochecton. She was 66.

She was the creator of Reilly’s Ice Cream Store and Art Gallery in Cochecton, and was the author of “Reflections From Cochecton.”

The daughter of the late Howard and Tyyne Falkenberg Hermann, she was born August 21, 1942 in Callicoon, NY. She was the widow of Robert C. White.

Mary Ann was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Cochecton Men’s Club, the Cochecton Preservation Society, the Callicoon United Methodist Church and the Hortonville Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include sons Robert and wife Marion of Manchester, MD and Andrew and companion Irene Ward of Cochecton; granddaughters Jessica, Robin, Erin, Heather, Brittany and April White; brothers Henry Hermann of Callicoon and Howard Hermann of Loudon, TN; sisters Helen Kohrs and husband John of Beach Lake, PA, Joyce Brooks and husband Victor of Callicoon and Jeanne McCullough and husband Ed of New Paltz; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Jeffrey White; and granddaughter, Kerri-Jo White.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 22, at Hortonville Presbyterian Church, Hortonville, NY. Cremation will be at the convenience of the family.
