Realists constrained in a stifling system

Historical film ‘The Duchess’ is October CineArt feature

CALLICOON, NY — The October CineArt feature will be “The Duchess,” starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, at the Callicoon Theater on Upper Main Street. It will be screened from Friday, October 24 through Monday, October 27 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Saturday, October 25 at 2:00 p.m.

Knightley is the 18th century Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire (reportedly a great-great-great-great-aunt of Diana, Princess of Wales), trapped in an unhappy triangle with her husband and his live-in mistress. She falls passionately in love with an ambitious young politician, and the affair threatens to erupt into a scandal.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times wrote, “The Duchess is a handsome historical film, impeccably mounted, gowned, wigged and feathered. This is not one of those delightful movies based on a Jane Austen novel. It is about hard realists, constrained in a stifling system and using whatever weapons they can command.”

Admission costs $8. A percentage of the profits and $1 per person from ticket sales benefit the programs and services of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, the Arts Council for Sullivan County. CineArt is a partnership between Delaware Valley Arts Alliance and the Callicoon Theater that promotes and screens independent, foreign, and art films.
