Learning Lenape culture
HAWLEY, PA A Lenape Childrens Circle will be held on October 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the PPL Environmental Learning Center. Traditional games, crafts, a Candy Dance, drumming and singing in the Lenape language will be included in the activities. The program is sponsored by the Northeast PA Audubon Society. Audubons camp scholarship recipients from the past year will also be there to give brief descriptions of their experiences. This program is free and open to all.
Shelley DePaul will be the presenter of the Childrens Circle. She is the director of the Lenape Language Program for the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania. She has been teaching Lenape classes and workshops for the past 10 years, and has developed Lenape language curricula for use in public schools, universities and home school courses.
The Lenape were some of the first people to live in this part of our world. Northeast PA Audubon signed a treaty with the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, agreeing to help promote Lenape culture, history and environmental stewardship ideals shared by both groups.
