A chilly harvest

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Tusten Historical Society will hold its annual Local History Event at the Tusten Town Hall on Bridge Street on Sunday, October 19 at 2:00 p.m. It will feature Carol Henry Dunn with a program on ice harvesting. Also giving remarks on topics of historical interest will be local residents Charles E. Knapp Sr., Orvis Vannatta and Floyd Campfield. A brief meeting will precede the program.

Dunn, of Beach Lake, PA, has long been interested in the harvesting of ice in the Upper Delaware River Valley. With the help of historical photos, she will answer questions about the process of harvesting ice, which was once a common industry in this area. In her research, Dunn has interviewed many individuals who took part in the ice harvests in years past, and will bring those stories to her audience.

A chemistry teacher at Wallenpaupack Area High School, Dunn is an officer on the board of trustees of the Wayne County Historical Society and also serves as the historian of Berlin Township, Wayne County. Her interest in preservation of the history of the Upper Delaware River Valley has led to lectures on such varied subjects as “The Vanishing American Outhouse” and “The Boarding Houses of Berlin Township,” for which she received a Historical Presentation Award from the Upper Delaware Heritage Alliance.

Admission is free, and all are welcome. Refreshments will be served. The society would welcome the opportunity to copy any photos on ice harvesting that might be brought to the event.
