The bright side of the bailout

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, NY—Dick Riseling is generally a fairly serious guy, especially when appearing in public and talking about his passion, renewable energy. So it was not unusual that when he spoke at a fundraiser for the Sullivan Alliance for Sustainable Development (SASD) on October 5 about the Wall Street bailout, newly signed by the President, he called it a “horrible” bill.

But when he talked about one of the bill’s provisions, which was attached in an effort to gain more support from lawmakers, Riseling spoke with an emotion approaching glee. The legislation contains provisions that extend tax credits for solar-energy projects for eight years and promote other forms of renewable energy.

Gas drilling companies backtracking

PENNSYLVANIA—Two gas companies, Chesapeake Appalachia and Range Resources, have announced a cut back on parts of their operation in Pennsylvania.

Chesapeake Appalachia has sent letters out to Northeast Pennsylvania landowners that it has revoked and rescinded offers to obtain more leases. The company said that the action was due to regulatory issues and to the current economic downturn.

New York DEC gas meetings scheduled

Draft scoping document released

ALBANY, NY—A draft scoping document, which will determine the subjects to be covered in the upcoming hearing regarding gas drilling in New York State, was released on October 7. According to Yancey Roy, a spokesman for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), this is a “first step in analyzing the potential environmental impacts of high-volume hydraulic fracturing (fracking) of horizontal wells” of the sort that will be used to tap gas reserves in the Marcellus Shale.
