WILLARD ‘WILLIE’ CONKLIN

Willard “Willie” Conklin of Sparrowbush, NY and a lifetime area resident, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. He was 82.

He was born May 22, 1926 in Port Jervis, the son of the late Alvin and Beatrice Oppelt Conklin. He married Elizabeth DeGroat 56 years ago on July 10, 1952 in Port Jervis.

Willie worked for 45 years for the Laborer’s Local #17, Newburgh, NY. Earlier in life he worked for the Erie Railroad.

A family statement reads: “Dad was a good husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.”

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Conklin at home; son Jeffrey Conklin and wife Rhoda of Huguenot, NY; daughters Nancy Vorhis and husband Roger of Kingston, AL and Wanda Malzahn and husband David of DeFuniak, FL; brothers Phillip Conklin of Middletown, Dwayne Conklin of Port Jervis, Francis Conklin of Sparrowbush; sisters Crystal Conklin of Pennsylvania and Naiomi Turner of Florida; 11 grandchildren, Brandon, Tyler and Marissa Conklin, David and Mitchell Malzahn, Alan, Corey, Ryan, Alicia, Marga and Roger Vorhis; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Willard was predeceased by his son, Willard Allen Conklin, in 1967.

Funeral services were held Friday, September 19, at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, Port Jervis.

Burial followed at Rural Valley Cemetery, Cuddebackville, NY.

ALBERTA GREEN

Alberta Green of St. David, AZ passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008. She was 79.

Born on August 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Alberta VanWagner Tyler.

Formerly of Cochecton, NY, Alberta attended Narrowsburg Central School and graduated in the Class of 1947.

The widow of Raymond Green, she is survived by several cousins, including Martha Fogg of Wyoming, Florence Tyler of New York, Gordon Tyler of Florida, Gene and Fran Fuller of New York and Pete and Carol Furman of New York; a stepdaughter, Mary Anne Kinne of Arizona; and her caregivers, Emalene and Mark Brown of Arizona.

There will be no visitation.

Graveside services were held at Overlook Cemetery, Damascus, PA on Tuesday, September 23 with the Rev. Stuart Hunt officiating. Burial was in Overlook Cemetery.

DONA M. JACOBS KURTZ

Dona M. Jacobs Kurtz, late of Port Jervis, NY, passed away Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Bon Secours Community Hospital, Port Jervis. She was 61.

She was born in Sparrowbush, NY on November 5, 1946, the daughter of the late Daniel and Esther DeGroat Jacobs.

She married David A. Kurtz Sr., who predeceased her.

Dona was an assembler for Kolmar Labs in Port Jervis.

A family statement reads: “Dona was a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who knew her. Dona enjoyed hunting, fishing and the outdoors. She loved to sew, craftmaking, and volunteered her time to many organizations.”

Dona is survived by two sisters, Gale Witkowski and Danella Jacobs of Port Jervis; two daughters, Georgieann Quick and her husband Ivan Sr. and Billie-Jo Mann, all of Port Jervis; two sons, David A. Kurtz, Jr. and wife Stacey of Port Jervis and Jonathan Kurtz and wife Darlene of Cochecton, NY; nine grandchildren, Ivan Jr., Jennifer, Justin, Stephanie, Kristin, David, Brandi, McKayla, and Joshua; one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, September 20 at the Knight Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis. Interment followed at Pine Hill Cemetery, Sparrowbush.

ELIZABETH C. REED

Elizabeth C. Reed of White Lake, NY, a longtime area resident, died on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY. She was 94.

She was born March 26, 1914 in Nanuet, NY, the daughter of the late Rudolph and Marie Horak Ellek.

Elizabeth was a retired office clerk at Bloomingdale’s Department Store in Manhattan. She was a member of St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Mongaup Valley, NY; the Bethel Catholic Club, the Bethelites; Bethel Senior Citizens; and the AARP. She was also a volunteer at Hamilton Ave. Hospital in Monticello, NY and was past president of the PTA for School #126, Astoria, Queens.

Survivors include her son, Alfred M. Reed Jr. and wife Maria of White Lake; two grandchildren, Michael K. Reed of Tampa, FL and Mark Reed and wife Veronica of Egg Harbor Twp., NJ; and a great-granddaughter.

She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Reed Sr. in 1996; and her sister, Tillie Strader.

Her funeral mass was held on Monday, September 22, at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Mongaup Valley with the Rev. John Tran officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Cemetery, Bethel.

Many thanks to all the staff at Sullivan County Adult Care Center, who gave such compassionate care to Elizabeth for the past five years. Thanks also to the nurses at Catskill Regional Medical Center for the care they gave.
