Lady Bears make it a dozen

Tri-Valley captures 12th home tournament title with win over Ellenville

By MARY FEUSNER

GRAHAMSVILE, NY — For the 12th time in the 19 years of the Tri-Valley invitational tournaments, the Lady Bears claimed the coveted championship trophy, downing MHAL rival Ellenville 3-1, coached by former Tri-Valley soccer standout Nicole Krom. Ellenville was the defending tourney champion.

Tri-Valley tallied three goals in the first period. At 13 minutes in, sophomore striker Agnes Pompeii served a crossing pass that Jakki Pugh finessed past Ellenville goaltender Kathleen DiMilia. It was Pugh’s fifth goal in four contests. At 28 minutes, junior midfielder Skylar Musa successfully struck a loose ball as both squads were scrambling in the goal mouth. It was Musa’s first goal of the season. With just :28 remaining in the first half, Pugh drove a blistering shot that was deflected by keeper DiMilia. The rebound went to Pompeii, who eluded a diving DiMilia.

At the half, Krom emphasized passing to penetrate the T-V defensive tandem of Karyn Sheeley and Amanda Martin. Ellenville junior forward Victoria Mann and midfielder Katie Burns connected numerous times on attack and tested the skills of T-V’s senior keeper Ellen Williams. Early in the second half, Ellenville tallied its lone goal. Burns threw in to a teammate, who promptly dropped it back to her. She chipped the ball to the opposite post out of the reach of any T-V defender.

There were more chances but neither team scored again, T-V amassed 16 shots on goal while Ellenville sent 11 shots on frame. T-V had a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Teams received their trophies and individual players were chosen for the all-tourney team. Ellenville junior teammates Katie Burns, Sabrina Castro and Victoria Mann impressed the coaches. Senior keeper Ellen Williams and sophomore striker Jakki Pugh joined junior Karyn Sheeley, who was named “Miss Defense,” and junior Amanda Martin, who was honored as “Most Valuable Player,” on the 2008 all-tourney team.

The consolation game of the T-V tourney between Eldred and Monticello will be played at Monticello on Saturday, September 20 at 10:00 a.m. At that time, more all-tourney team members will be honored.

Tri-Valley improved to 4-0 with the win, while Ellenville fell to 1-2.
