Viewing a history of worship down rural lanes
HONESDALE, PA The Wayne County Historical Society will conduct a bus trip to rural Methodist churches in the Damascus Township area on Saturday, October 11. It will offer an autumn ride through the Wayne County countryside and visits to six of the countys classic rural churches, culminating in an old-fashioned all-you-can-eat chicken and biscuit dinner at the Galilee Grange Hall.
This trip, coordinated by WCHS Research Librarian Gloria McCullough with the assistance of Rev. Jean Blackie, will be an opportunity to experience this aspect of country life before it is just a memory. Congregation members will be stationed at each of the churches to provide its history and point out unique architectural features.
The school bus will leave the Honesdale Borough parking lot behind the historical society building, 810 Main Street, at 9:00 a.m. Morning stops will be the Smith Hill United Methodist Church, the Damascus Manor United Methodist Church and the Abrahamsville United Methodist Church. The group will enjoy box lunches from the Lookout General Store on the grounds of the Lookout United Methodist Church. Sandwich choices, ordered with tour reservations, are ham, turkey or roast beef on your bread choice, with iced tea (unsweetened) or soda included.
In the afternoon, the bus will stop at the Union United Methodist Church and the Equinunk United Methodist Church. The last stop is the Galilee Grange, where Grange president June Marzani will tell the history of the grange while tour participants enjoy dinner.
The price, including lunch and dinner, is $30 for WCHS members and $32 for non-members. Reservations can be made at the Wayne County Historical Society at 810 Main Street, Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The deadline for reservations is September 26.
