Backyard bounty

Beautiful and interesting things abound just outside the back door for most of us enjoying life in the Upper Delaware region. Birds, bugs, blooms and more are mere steps away from our homes. This week, my yard featured hummingbirds, purple coneflower, pickerel frogs, grasshoppers and more.

In Eldred, NY, River Talk reader John Sundholm has been observing multiple mushrooms and the brilliant red Lobelia cardinalis wildflower. I also encountered this beauty ablaze on the banks of the stream at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts while covering the recent Jonas Brothers concert.

Woodloch Springs’ eco-friendly goose deterrents

HAWLEY, PA—Woodloch Springs has devised an eco-friendly means of deterring migratory geese that can become a nuisance on the golf course: two four-legged resident employees named Bogey and Brandy. The dogs do not harm the geese, but merely discourage them from settling and nesting on the golf course ponds and wetlands. Bogey and Brandy work mainly during the spring and fall months when migration occurs.
