Political considerations loom large

MONTICELLO, NY—With only 19 months worth of space left at the landfill, and no final decision on the expansion expected in the near future, garbage is looming larger than ever as an issue among county legislators.

At a meeting at the government center on August 14, lawmakers generally agreed that a much more aggressive recycling program needs to be part of the county’s future. What was not agreed upon, however, was whether the county should move forward on its own or try to gain the cooperation of the supervisors and mayors of the towns and villages.

Bonacic proposes gas legislation

Bill to enhance local control of gas drilling

ALBANY, NY—In the past few weeks, officials from several Sullivan County towns have written to Albany asking for more local control over gas drilling issues. Now, New York Senator John Bonacic has introduced legislation that would allow towns to exert more local control.

Developer’s permit pulled

Litigation expected

BETHEL, NY—It was supposed to be a permit for a “curb cut,” which would provide entrance into a “wood lot access” affording the owner access to the property. But the entrance, on a busy stretch of Smallwood’s most traveled road, turned out to be much larger. After failing to come to an agreement with the developer on what the curb-cut permit allowed him to do, the Bethel town board revoked the permit for the entrance, and its use is now prohibited.
