Probing the boundaries of the theatrical in Highland Lake

HIGHLAND LAKE, NY — The second weekend of NACL’s Catskill Festival of New Theatre welcomes The Ghost Road Company and The New York Neo-Futurists in two performances that push the envelope of theatrical experience.

The Ghost Road Company will present “Elektra” on Friday, August 23. It is an ensemble-devised adaptation of “The Libation Bearers,” and revolves around the dynamics of family and power and how memory can be used as both a way to comfort and to control. Set against the backdrop of the home front after a war abroad, the piece combines songs, text and imagery to explore both the public and private lives of a family on the verge of collapse. It is directed by Katharine Noon.

The New York Neo-Futurists will present “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.” It is an award-winning, energetic ever-changing attempt to perform 30 original plays in 60 minutes. The show, which enjoys an open run every weekend in New York City’s East Village, is a collage of the comic and tragic, the political and personal, the visceral and experimental, embracing chance, change and chaos.

Tickets cost $10 to $25; pay what you can.

The NACL company (Brad Krumholz, Tannis Kowalchuk, Glenn Hall and Sarah Dey Hirshan) is the producer of the festival. All the festival artists are invited to live at NACL residence, to perform their show once and to engage in methodological and creative exchanges with one another throughout the duration of the festival.
