Benchmark: bid to benefit the arts!
By SANDY LONG
HONESDALE, PA There are 53 of them, and they are the beautiful, thought-provoking, functional creations of area artists ranging in age from 8 to 88. Their form is the bench, and the range of approaches taken by the artists who crafted and contributed them to the Wayne County Arts Alliance (WCAA) for their annual fundraising art auction is awe-inspiring.
With a winning bid on August 16, any one of them can be yours.
Benchmarks is WCAAs fifth annual summer artworks project. Previous themes have featured deer and clocks interpreted in zany, whimsical or meaningful ways. Wayne County artists contribute the work and area businesses support the project by sponsoring benches.
The auction will be held on Saturday, August 16 at the Honesdale High School at 459 Terrace St. Honesdale. Described as a fun and festive event with something for everyone, the gala-style event is free of charge and the public is encouraged to attend. The preview begins at 6:00 p.m. with bidding at 7:00 p.m. Artist Dan Brinkerhoff, who has contributed a bench, will bring his portable movie theater featuring a 16-foot screen mounted on a former motor home for the entertainment of all who attend.
No previous auction experience is necessary. Local celebrity auctioneer Bob Mermell will contribute his humorous and breezy style while making it easy for all to participate in the bidding. Live phone bidding and absentee bidding are also available.
