An evening of poetry and jazz at Liberty Free

LIBERTY, NY — The Liberty Free theatre will present an evening of poetry and jazz with poet Barry Wallenstein and guitarist Steve Carlin for one performance only, Sunday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m. The live performance is a celebration of their newest CD collaboration, “Euphoria Ripens” and of “Acoustic Jazz,” Carlin’s new CD of solo guitar compositions.

Wallenstein is the author of five collections of poetry, including “Beast Is a Wolf With Brown Fire” (BOA Editions, 1977 and “A Measure of Conduct,” (Ridgeway Press, 1999). His poetry has appeared in over 100 journals in the United States and abroad. He has made six recordings of his poetry with jazz. He is an Emeritus Professor of literature and creative writing at the City University of New York and an editor of American Book Review. In October of 2008, he’ll return to the writer’s retreat at the monastery in Saorge for his sixth residency, and in November he’ll be a resident fellow at Fundación Valparaiso in Spain.

Carlin is an accomplished composer/guitarist who has gained his reputation by working in many different genres of music. He studied guitar with John Scofield and Mike Santiago, and 20th-century music with musicologist Ralph Blauvelt. He has produced and hosted his own live radio show called “Rhythm Changes,” an eclectic mix of jazz, Brazilian, and world music at WJFF public radio. Carlin has worked in everything from a 17-piece orchestra to trios, duos and solo guitar.

Admission is free, but seating is limited and reservations are recommended. The audience is invited to gather after the performance for food, drink and music. The theatre is located at 109 South Main Street, Liberty.
