This twelve-spotted skimmer, named for the multitude of spots on the wings, perches on the tip of a twig along the Delaware River. The wing markings make this dragonfly easy to identify.

Dragonflies: the flight of the odonates

During the hot summer days of July and August, it is difficult not to walk by a pond, lake or river and not be able to spot at least a few dragonflies or damselflies chasing prey or each other in courtship. Bobbing and weaving, these insects put on an aerial display as they hover for a moment, then zoom away at speeds that may approach 40 mph.

Fifty-six have drowned in Upper Delaware River

UPPER DELAWARE RIVER VALLEY—Fifty-six people have drowned in the Upper Delaware River since 1980. Fifty-three were male, and 29 were swimming or wading. The average age was about 28. Three of the 56 had lifejackets on but were not wearing them properly; the rest had no such protection.
